Windows Defender is a worthless tool.
    Disable it altogether.

Hi XP Dummy. I agree with Broni. I would not even worry about using Windows Defender since it doesn't protect your computer from threats as well as other security programs do.

If you want a replacement for Windows Defender as well as a good antivirus program then I would recommend installing Microsoft Security Essentials.

    Do you have anti-virus installed?

Some AV software switches defender off because the AV program takes over the functionality offered by Windows Defender. This is by design.

First off, thanks for the replies.

Also, thanks for ther "adjustment" in the subject line.

I tried searching with the error # and got nothing.

I am currently using Windows Sercurity Essentials as my main A/V program, and I couldn't determine if that was why Defender wasn't loading properly.

I was trying to find a way to check downloaded files before opening them, and thought that Defender would do that.

So what does the error # mean?

    Thanks

If you are using MSE then that AV will automatically switch off Windows Defender when the program installs. You probably received that error message because MSE was already running in the background and when you attempted to start Windows Defender it encountered that error message.

Thanks. That makes sense. My concern was virus checking downloaded internet files before opening them. Does MSE do that? Thanks again for responding.

Yes MSE does scan files when you download them from the internet.
