We recently updated my workstation from XP Pro 32 on an AMD6400 dual 3.3G processor with 4 Gigs RAM to Windows 7 Pro 64 AMD965 3.4g Quad with 8 Gs of ram.

All the SATA hard drives were moved to the new Win 7 machine except for the C drive on XP and mapped to Win 7.

XP if faster than Win 7.

    1. MSIE 8 (32) on an old AMD2800 with 1.5G rame takes 1-2 seconds to load and connect to google. Win 7 about 5 secs.

    2. A VB6 program complie on a program residing on the Win 7 machine takes 20 seconds on the AMD6400 and 50 secs on Win 7 and the program and everything is going accross the network to Win 7. Yet XP is 2.5 times faster.

This is true for most other things. Win 7 is at least 2 times slower even though it is on a faster CPU with more processors and more memory.

The Windows 7 system has been very disappointing.

I do not understand why and really need some ideas on how to identify the problem(s) and speed it up.

Not sure what to suggest here but the only way to make a fair comparison between XP and 7 would be on a dual boot system with identical setup, software, anti virus, etc. I have a win7/XP dual boot on my PC and although I have never timed anything win7 is faster to boot up and I haven't noticed much difference with anything else it is just a lot nicer to use.

There are a few system checks you could run which may find something that is slowing things down on the win7 machine but no guarantees.

In explorer right click on the hard drive, click properties, click tools tab and then click check now.

From start type cmd in the search box. Then at the command prompt type in sfc /scannow and hit enter.

You could also see what is running at start up and stop all the non essential progs. Click start, enter msconfig in the search box and press enter, a box will open. Click the startup tab and then uncheck all the progs that you don't need to run at start up.

I am sure more advice will follow.

I spoke to a relative who supports microsoft systems for the US Army and he see the same thing - Win7 is slower than XP.

SFC scannow did not find anything.

The drive what are shared with the VB6 code is shared (physically on the WIn7 Machine).

The only think that may come into play is 64 bit translation???
Difference in how Win 7 handles hard drives.
    etc.

I just can't believe how slow it is and even thinking of going back to XP.

Same thing here. XP was faster. Win 7 does shut down quick though.

I wonder if it is a 64 bit issue??? I went to 64 to get better performance.
Anyone out there have preformance issues with Win 7 32 bit???

i tried both win 7 ultimate 32 and 64 on my machine. (never tried xp on that one but I tried vista ultimate 32 as well as 64)

    it SEEMED to me that:
Win 7 64 is faster that vista and faster than win 7 32. (I think slowness in win 7 32 is related to lack of RAM; even when PC is idling memory usage is at 25% to 30%)

and if i remember correctly i couldn't notice much difference in speed between vista 32 and vista 64.

i believe any slowness in win 7 boot up is an impression because of the stupid animation in the windows logo.

edit: my system is posted in profile.

Did you try.this Start\Right click Computer\Properties\Rating: click on Windows Experience Index. Re-Run Assessment. After it runs click on the Question Mark It will give you tips on how to improve your systems performance.

    Thanks LJ

My W7 is not just slow on Boot up. It is slow the rest of the time.

It is the RAM. Even though I went with better and more DDR 3 ram it is slower. In a DiskBench test where we used RamDisk the W7 was TWICE as slow as XP which as older DDR2 RAM.

What can cause the RAM to be slower and I do mean twice as slow?

Ran Assesment but not use that I understand. The ? did not heal but the rating are
    Base 5.0
    Processor 7.4
    RAM 7.5
    Graphics 5.0
    Gaming Graphics 5.8
    Primary Hard Drive 5.9

Graphics looks low. This is a development machine. No gaming, etc.

If 7.9 is top then it is well below and not good.
Altough this showed RAM to be 7.5 my ram test using both RamDrive with DriveBench and our own lille program does confirm that it is the RAM that is twice as slow.

Any ideas why? Is DDR3 slower than DDR2? I don't remember the ram type since the new system was bought 6 mos ago and the XP more like 2 yrs ago.

Ran the assessment and it was 4.3 before and after following the suggestions, so if your running at 7.5 I'd say you're doing pretty good. Conversely my machine is crawling.

Problem has been found to the the ASUS CPU settings. They have an app that lets you set the MB to Performance, Max Power Savings or Auto. It was on Max Power Sevaings. Changing to Auto worked.

I'm wondering if I have the same issue.
Where would I look to find if my MB has this same setting?

BIOS would probably be the first & the best place to start with.

My question what is the app and where do I get it to solve the problem?
    Thanks in advance,

Then rtfm that came with motherboard & also go through the motherboard cd.

If the manufacturer has some utility to control & manage it, it would given over there.
