I have successfully set up all my software and accessories in a new Windows 7 Home Premium laptop except my Canoscan LiDE 80 flatbed scanner. Microsoft says it is compatible with Windows 7 but all attempts to install have failed.

Automatically detecting it fails. Downloading a new driver (supposedly compatible with Windows 7) fails. Trying the old driver from the original setup CD fails. Trying to run it in compatibility mode fails. Troubleshooting just sends me in circles. Sometimes the driver appears to load to my hard drive, but I can't locate it once the procedure is complete.

The scanner does show up in Devices and Printers as an unspecified device.

(If this should have gone in the hardware section, I apologize.) Any ideas? I've run out of options to try.

    According to the HCL:

Try connecting it to another USB port.

Also try other USB cable. It could be a cable problem too.

Does this scanner has external power input or does it draw power from computer itself through USB ?

I have tried all three ports on the computer, but I will try another cable. No external power. I did, however, successfully install the scanner - on the first attempt - to someone else's Vista laptop as a test.

Changing the cable did not help. Double-checked Windows update settings; they are correct to automatically find drivers. I also tried going through the unspecified device shown in Devices and Printers. I continue to get the message "Windows cannot find driver software for your device. "

Your USB ports are most probably not supplying enough power to scanner to power it up properly.

Open Device Manager, Double click "Universal Serial Bus Controllers ", right "click on USB Root Hub" & click Properties.Click on "Power" tab. There it would show Power Available & Power Required. If Power Required is greater than equal to Power Available, your scanner may not work.

This may be it. Power available and power required for the unknown device are equal.

The only option I can think of is getting an external powered USB hub & then connecting the scanner to the hub & hub to the computer. This may or may not work as scanners don't like anything in between them & the computer.

After emails to Canon tech support, the verdict is that the scanner model is NOT compatible with Windows 7, 64 bit, no matter what Microsoft says. A new scanner is in my future.
