    Hello,

I have in computer terms a prehistoric scanner: an Agfa Snapscan 1212U - vintage about 1998. It's an excellent scanner and I've no desire to junk it and lay out good money for a new one. In the meantime Agfa has got out of that business and no product support, driver updates or anything else is availaable. But that's the computer industry for you!

The driver is for Win98 SP2. On each previous occasion when I've formatted my C-drive and reinstalled XP the scaner has installed without any problem. Not this time though. This time the driver instals as usual and Device Manager detects it and says the device is working OK, but although the proprietary scanner program ( "Agfa ScanWise" ver 1.2) splash-screen loads it appears only very briefly and the program itself fails to run.

It's been a while since the last time I successfully installed this software, and at some point I've installed XP SP3 on my pc. It occurs to me that this might have something to do with the problem.

Has anyone got any suggestions please?

I well remember my Snapscan 1212U - fine scanner, but mine died many years ago :)

I can only hazard a guess as to why you have this issue - a corrupted install perhaps or try running Scanwise in Compatability Mode.

If all fails try Vuescan - a standalone scanner application which I have used for years since NikonScan Software insisted that there was a hardware problem in the scanner, but it works fine in Vuescan and there are more options.

The 1212U is compatible with this software - trial available.

    Hi Pete

Many thanks for the helpful comments.

I don't think it's a corrupted instal because I've already tried three times. Even so, I might give it another go out of desperation.

But I'm wondering if anyone can spot what the cause might be at a more fundamental level. As mentioned, might not my having installed SP3 since the last (successful) instal of this program have something to do with it and - if so - is there some known workaround for that?

For the same reason I'll postpone trialling Vuescan for the time being. But thanks for that suggestion.
