I am using osk.exe to type this post :(
my ps/2 keyboard not working, It does not show anything when i type something. Even the NUM LOCK light isn't on. I went to device manager but found nothing. Went to check settings, but no drivers shown. even attempt to unplug ps/2 port and replug, but still no luck.

what should i do now? is there batteries installed behind the keyboard?

If the keyboard is wired as opposed to wireless there are no batteries in the keyboard - a PS/2 keyboard is a standard wired keyboard.

If ther is no reference to a keyboard in Device Manager under Keyboards the computer is not seeing a keyboard.

2 possible causes - some element of the keyboard has failed, maybe the keyboard itself or the wired connection to the computer or....

the PS/2 port on the computer has failed.

Your first step is to try another keyboard.

BTW - PS/2 connections are not 'hot pluggable' - to safely remove or replace a PS/2 connection you must turn off the computer first, then unplug the PS/2 device and either plug it or another in and then reboot.

If your System specs are correct, then I am surprised that you see anything at all. 248 mb of Ram, running XP is just not enough by any stretch of the imagination, 512 mb is regarded as minimum for Windows XP.

Normally only cordless keyboards have Batteries, not PS2.

XP will run on 248Mb (256 - 8 for onboard graphics). Not quickly, but it will run just fine. And 128Mb is the recommended minimum, but it will even run on 64Mb. With those small amounts, you certainly need a proper page file set up, but it will run. But that is not the problem here anyway, so it is not something to worry about today. That said, for future reference, 1Gb is considered the "sweet spot" for XP and single core CPUs. Less than 1Gb you see a performance loss, more than 1Gb and you see little, if any boost.

I agree with Pete and you should try another keyboard. If your computer supports USB, you might try a USB keyboard, since they will be much easier to find as PS/2 has just about completely phased out. In fact, you may only be able to find USB keyboards, though usually USB to PS/2 adapters are readily available.

Note that since your mouse works, if that too uses PS/2, I would suspect the keyboard.

To hawk22 and Bill: I know that my pc run very slow because of insufficient RAM, but I bought this pc 10 YEARS AGO!!!!! My mum wanted to upgrade this **** computer to 512MB, but my dad object it as it may affect my studies. Until today, my computer runs very very slow because of huge resources used. I've even tried to increasing Virtual Memory (aka pagefile), but it cause system unstable.

to Bill again: I am using USB mouse....

To PeteC: you're right. PS/2 keyboard is not hot pluggable. I unplug it then replug it when the computer is OFF, after a cold boot, my keyboard back to function-able again.
Since my pc is 10 yrs old already, there's no doubt that there is some bad components now. I think I should replace my old ps/2 keyboard to new USB keyboard~

Anybody will recommend any RAM increasing software before I mark the thread as "resolved "?

Nothing to recommend. These programs are bogus. Free RAM is wasted RAM!

What these programs do is that they requests a large amount of memory, thereby 'pushing' any programs/services/drivers that are loaded in RAM to the page file. They then releases their lock on that memory, giving you the appearance of loads of 'free' ram.

Now when Windows needs access again to any of the programs/services/drivers code that was previously held in RAM, but because of using a 'ram optimizer' was pushed out to the page file it has to first load it back from your hard drive into memory... slowing your computing experience considerably!

You should be able to increase your RAM to 2GB which would make it considerably quicker than what you have at the moment. Neil.:D

It really depends on for how much longer you intend to hang on to the PC, extensive upgrading, if you only want to keep it for another year or two, is not worth the money Ram and cpu + motherboard is to expensive for that vintage.
Bigger hard drive yes as this, if whenever you upgrade to something more up to date can be used again, no loss there, some extra ram would certainly be of great help, but again DDR1 Ram is relatively expensive compared to DDR2 or DDR3 so I would not go overboard there as you will not be able to use that ram again, my suggestion would be to add one module of 512 MB if you intend to keep a bit longer 2 modules of 512 MB.

On your present configuration you would by upgrading your ram, see the biggest improvement by going from 256 mb to 1Gig, you would see not that big of an improvement again going from 1 Gig to 2 Gig.

You are obviously not using any high cpu or ram intensive programs otherwise your 256 mb of ram would have left you stranded beforehand.

Think very carefully before parting with your Dollars, what your plans for the future are.

If you can find compatible RAM, I would go that way as that will provide the biggest bang for your money in terms of performance. I would be hesitant to add a hard drive because it is likely that motherboard supports only EIDE and they are being phased out for SATA. Current motherboards on the market now only have one IDE connection and it is inevitable future motherboards will have none. If you need more space, I would look at uninstalling programs you don't use. If you still need more space, a second-hand HD may be something to consider to add as secondary drive.

I would not waste my time or money on a faster CPU for such an older system.

And in any case, regardless what you do, adding more hardware WILL place a greater demand on your power supply, which may be at or near capacity already. And adding more hardware WILL place a greater demand on system cooling as well. So at the very least, make sure the interior is clean of heat trapping dust and dirt, and that all fans are still spinning freely.

yeah, you all are right. If I can get good results in my secondary school exam which is held on next year, my parents may consider for buying a NEW computer. :)

will mark the thread as 'resolved'.
