CanI copy and paste "C:\windows\repair" folder or files in normal mode?

I tried Surerdude2's trick, from the sticky, but, I could not get past the first line. machine said " cd\ invalid command ".

I have a generic pc running OEM (no disc) windows xp pro with Sp3 and nt4.0. My wife's computer is an e-machine running xp home. Printer is Hp Officejet 6300. They are all plugged into a Zonenet router. There is a third computer in the family room that uses a wireless connection to the internet on the same router. It was part of our work group at one time.

My AV software is Panda IS 2010. I also have Windows Defender. Wife's computer is protected by Symantic. One of the first things I did was run full scans on all of the computers thinking that I must have picked up a virus. Even tried Combofix. That worked for me in the past. No virus or malware found.

While perusing the forum and searching through threads I noticed ads for Registry Booster so I downloaded it and ran the scan. It said I had 565 registry errors. so I paid for the program and ran the "fix" Bad idea! I did undo that "fix" And ran another registry fix from ILIO. that scan said there were 600+ registry errors.

Restore points would not restore as in one of the posts I was looking at, leading me to try Suferdude2's plan.

Anyway, I went messing around in recovery console and checked and unchecked different settings and of course only made things worse. I also took a look at the registry and had enough sense not to mess around with any of the settings there.

This whole mess began about two weeks ago when I tried to print something on my network printer. I got a "paper jam" message. I cleared the jam but, the message persisted. I powered off the printer and turned it back on. Message remained and print job waited. Restarted computer. Message remained. Next, I uninstalled the printer and reinstalled the software from the cd. Printer is Hp Officejet 6300 series. Still the "paper jam" message.

I could print from my wife's computer but not this one. I was able to print if I used the USB cable plugged directly into my computer. The printer was not found in MY NETWORK PLACES so I ran Network setup wizard and was able to print one time. The next time I wanted to print a QB Invoice no network printer. I could still access Shared Folder on my wife's computer and I sent a test page to that folder and was able to print from there.

I have spent many hours reading posts here and trying many suggestions. Now windows defender won't launch.

Back to my question. Can I repair the windows files from "C\windows\repair" folder. The folder contains the following files...
    • autoexec.nt
    • ntuser
    • security
    • system
    • config.nt
    • setup (text file)
    • default
    • setup (application)
    • software
    This folder was created 12/05/2008
All third party software seems to be intact and I can access the
internet and the shared folder on my wife's computer.

    Thanks

Corrected - you left out the \ and the BBS software saw it as a Smiley without.

I am looking at your post and wondering how to respond - when I have that clear I will post back.

Hi, hope this might help. First thing I would do is make sure you have back ups of all your important files just incase things get worse.

The first repair I would try is to run the repair facility on the windows installation disc. This should replace any damaged files that you have on your system. If this does not make any difference I would then try some tests on the hard drive and/or a complete disc format and a clean reinstallation of Windows

It is possible to obtain free system cleaners like CCleaner, sorry to see you paid for one.

I think you approached this problem from the wrong direction - your first step should have been to resolve the original issue of the paper jam which is either a printer or network problem .....

    http://www.google.com/search?source...GB352GB352&q=Officejet+6300+paper+jam+message

Messing about with Registry Cleaners is not to be advised - there is a lot of scum-ware around which will find 100's of imaginary Registry errors and offer to fix only if you pay. We have no control on the BBS over which ads pop up as they do not originate from this site, but from 3rd parties.

I am not sure why you would want to copy the files you mention into your Windows application - I can't see that helping, in fact it might well render your computer unbootable.

Without an installation CD your only chance of recovery isto try running Systenm Restore as indicated in the sticky .....

Where are you entering this command? It should be entered in a Command Window - Start > Run > cmd > Enter. At the flashing cursor type cd\ which takes you to the C:\ prompt.

Id this what you have done?

    Sorry, I missed that.

On reflection as you will no doubt have a valid licence key for Windows you will be quite within your rights to download or borrow a clean copy of windows to do the repair routine with.

NO - You cannot download a legal copy of Windows XP from MS - any other download regardless of the source will be pirated.

A borrowed copy of an XP installation disk may work providing that it is at the same Service Pack level as the installed OS - the question of the origina linstall being OEM is a possible issue.

    its fixed

Everything seems to be working fine now. First of all I did not get a copy of installation disc. All of the original files are on my hard drive in rar. files.

What I ended up doing though was going into the Admim. tools and turning on all of the services. From there I was able to farret out which things I needed and did not need. It seems that when I uninstalled the problem printer, it took some necessary .dll files relating to the network service.

Anyway, after a few more hours of turning on and off services and rebooting in between, I was able to get this thing back in working order.

I do think it is possible to copy and paste from the rar. files to the system files but you have to be careful to put the right things in their proper place.

So once again I want to thank you for your help and support.

    Mark this resolved.
