I've read the various threads here, but for the life of me I cannot find where to get this. I just set up a new drive (w/ SP2) and went to the MS site and couldn't find it. They want you to download another program called MS Update
    1st. See...
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/help/learn-how-to-install-windows-xp-service-pack-3-sp3

    http://www.update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us

I don't want anymore MS files than absolutely necessary.

    Hi Chas,
I only set up auto updates on machines I sell, otherwise on my own & household machines I do updates weekly or when I get bored, if your isp plan download limit is reached here in australia you know it when you are trying to do updates as you generally get cut back to equivilant to dial-up! well that is if you are on broadband and if not? updating on dail-up is painfully slow at the best of time, so limiting the amount of updates is the best way to go, if you do set win-update to off go into the security centre & change the notifications as it will get annoying

    regards Jac

The issue was a slow down after the updates were installed and the the system restarted.
Since this post I have deleted all of the updates (which were all done on the same day - since it's a new drive), and now the thing runs fine. Go figure!
Auto updates is definitely off and will remain that way. I've pretty much had enough of MS and their files that seem to do anything but help.
