Right-click the task bar and select Properties, select the Notification Area tab, and then click the Customize button. Check to see if Safely Remove Hardware is set to Hide in the Behavior column. If so, change it to Hide when inactive.

Make sure that you have the latest drivers installed, especially for your motherboard and BIOS.

What happens when you run this command: rundll32 shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll

Did you copy/paste the command correctly?

    Code:
    rundll32 shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll
Your error usually happens when you forget the _ (uderscore) between Control and Run.

No you are correct I missed the underscore. Should have put on my glasses.
I was not able to copy/paste from your post, is there a way to do that? I manually copied it into the command prompt.
    Thanks
Will try again soon as I get home.

Copy the text, then in a command prompt, right click in this window & from the menu choose Paste.

So there's nothing that uses the "Safe to Remove" function, in which case the icon isn't shown.

I did have my sansa fuze plugged in at the time but will try plugging in another peripheral to make sure it sees something and see if the icon shows with something active. But I have the icon set to show not hide should it not show anyway?

The icon will only be present when a Device that is required to be Safely Removed' is plugged in, generally storage media e.g. an external hard drive, USB stick. Hardware such as USB connected printers do not require to be safely removed as they are not storage media.

It is basically all to do with Write Caching - see screen shot for an explanation - USB stick plugged in.

I am not into mp3 players of any flavour - check with a USB stick inserted.

That has got it. It apparently does not see the fuze at all. Even though I can write to it. Problem solved. Thanks all.
