Resolved Randomly lose newtwork and internet with a twist

I’m hoping that someone can help me pinpoint the problem here.
In my network I have a D-Link DIR-615 router that is set to factory default (DHCP - no security) and a Speedstream 4201 DSL modem. The computer is an IBM ThinkCentre M55p 8811-CTO "“ Win7 Pro x64 (fresh install) - with an Intel 82566DM Gigabit Network Connection (with the latest driver).
From time to time (without warning and no particular program) I lose my internet connection. I can sometimes get the network connection back up by going into Network and Sharing Center and having Windows resolve the issue but cannot ever get the internet back unless I reboot the router. That tells me it’s the router that’s the problem, right... Not necessarily.
If I bypass the router and plug the computer directly into the modem the modem does not register the Ethernet cable connection. Even when I restart the computer the modem does not see the connection BUT if I then plug the cable back into the router the connection resolves and I have everything back once again until it craps out on me once more.
I cannot pinpoint where the problem might be and it is driving me nuts, as you might well imagine.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Logging into the modem at 192.168.2.1 does not give an option for setting Bridge Mode. It is supplied by Aliant here in Canada.

The only options in Mode are Auto-Connect on Disconnect or Use Idle Timeout

Auto-Connect is chosen by default

The connection has been up for 6 hours now so there is no rhyme or reason for when it disconnects

 

Can you set your router to have a static WAN IP ? Try giving a static WAN static IP, say 192.168.2.10. See what happens then.

 

I can see Router IP Address on the Network Settings page and it is currently the standard 192.168.0.1 - are you suggesting that I change that to something else?

I must admit I am not a network person. If you know the D-Link GUI can you suggest where I might set a static IP for it if not in the settings I have found above?

When I set the router up as you suggested I lose the connection altogether once I disable DHCP.

What I have done is reset the modem to factory default without my ISP's UN & PW and embedded that into the router. So far, so good. I'll let you know if it craps out on me.

Well, that didn't work. I lost the connection without warning after about 12 hours of being connected. No rhyme or reason... then died five minutes after I restarted the router

Wireless connection still worked though all of this. This is baffling, eh?

Any further thoughts?

In addition to what TonyT said.

It’d be a good idea to check if you have the latest firmware for the D-Link 615.

Depending on hardware version of router the latest firmware released on 3/10 fixed various problems.

Dlink 615 will check it automatically "“ log in to menu "“ Tools tab "“ Select Firmware on left side of screen "“ then Check Now button.

 

Those were the settings as I had described (UN & PW in the router, etc.) but the modem does not appear to have a setting for bridge mode. If this can be done, it is not obvious as to where it can be changed. You can see the 3 available web pages in the modem by following the links on this page http://atlanticgolfgroup.ca/

The ISP's support page for using "that modem-router along with other routers" suggests that the modem and the foreign router must both have the PPoE login credentials however, when I contacted a senior support level tech he said that the router must be set to Dynamic IP (DHCP) and thereby not include those details. As you can see, I am dealing with both the right and left hands and they aren't talking to each other.

I have tried it both ways and it doesn't seem to make a difference, I have lost the connection either way.

The firmware is up to date - 3.12NA

Hasn't cut out yet but I have a new problem though.

I can connect my main computer via cable and any others via WLAN but no others by cable.

Is it a setting?

 

I think my dentist has and easier time pulling teeth however, I think it's time to complain to them again

 

After 3 hours and 3 tech levels with DLink they have decided that the best thing to do is replace the router. It go to the point, after them having me do this, that and another thing, where I couldn't log into the router's admin area. It's now truly toast.
