I'm trying to copy a file from an XP PC to a Win7 PC. The Win7 PC can "see" the file on the XP PC but when I try to "copy & paste" the file, I get the following message: "You need permission to perform this action" followed by: "You require permission from the computer's administrator to make changes to this file ".

    1) I'm not trying to make changes to the file
    2) I have admin privileges.

    Any ideas?

If UAC is enabled try to copy the file (for example) into C:\Users\username\AppData\LocalLow - if it succeeds then you probably pasting the file into WRP protected folder.

Are you sitting at the Win 7 machine when doing the coping?
If so - does the XP machine have the UserName and Password enabled - so that you have to log into the machine? If not - enable that.

Will this error persist if you turn the UAC off?

    ...maybe this can help:

"Windows 7 has implemented addition security mechanism to prevent accidental or intentional file or folder modification by not allowing users other then owner of file or folder to access it. Hence incase if you need to access, modify or delete such files or folder you need to take ownership first then assign rights or permission to respective users. Here is Guide on How to take Ownership and Grant Permission in Window 7. "

The instructions in that article don't work because the current owner cannot be displayed. From reading some of the other posts it looks like this problem has been run into by several others.

Yes, I've got this problem too. After installing W7 Ultimate on my pc's volume C: I can't access the root of my volume E:, W7 "says" "You don't have permissions... ", although I can read/write any folder on volume D: (I am the domain admin).
When I tried to see the owner of E:\ I got the error "the current owner cannot be displayed ", so I logged on as built-in Administrator, did make Domain Admins group the owner of the E:\ (there were errors during applying the owner information) and ... still has the same problem.

The most interesting fact: network access to volume E:\ (\\pcname\e$) works perfect from a VISTA workstation!

So if you'll be able to copy/paste a file on your W7 machine from another W7/Vista PC (not XP!) we're probably suffering from the same issue...

Thanks for your time. I was able to transfer the file by installing an FTP server on the W7. Fortunately I don't often need to transfer files.
