    XP Professional SP3

When I try to boot my PC a message on a black screen says:

"The following file is missing or corrupt: Windows\system32\config\system "

I am then told to insert the installation disc and try a repair, after I have done this I am asked:

"which windows installation would you like to log onto to cancel press enter "

After I have pressed 1, I am asked for the adiministator password. However, I do not use a password to log onto the admin account. There are also two other non admin accounts.

This suggests that a password was set when the OS was installed, but the computer is set to auto login?

We cannot help with lost passwords - see Posting Rules

All I can suggest is that you try a few obvious passwords such as - password, the make of the computer, etc.

The only concrete suggestion I can make is to make a clean install of Windows, but I am surmising that you do not have a current backup of your personal data?

What service pack version is on the installation CD?
The reason I bring this up is that there was an issue where the Admin password is blank, and then trying to use the Recovery Console or do a Repair installation and you get stopped by lack of a password.

I've fixed it now by going into to setup and doing a repair installation. That way I was not asked for the admin password, though I will have to reinstall all my updates. The disc is SP2
