    Hello,
I have searched here and the internet but have not found a cause or solution for my situation.
OS: Windows XP SP3 (up-to-date) (ample CPU and RAM)
Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007.
Not networked (2 systems share the same modem but they are not "aware of each other" and the other uses Office 2003.)

Files spontaneously become "read-only" I open them as non read-only.
Initially it seemed to occur when I used font Effects: shadow, emboss, etc.; then text-highlighting and font colors. Now occurs globally - even with document properties as default.
I notice the read-only problem when I try to save with the save icon, Ctrl+S, or Save from the office button.
It states "save as" and gives me the originating folder - its reason is that the document is "read-only" and when I look up at the document name, it is suddenly read-only (and had not been when opened)

There have been no changes (S/W or H/W) preceding this.

Any help would be greatly hoped for and appreciated!
    Thanks!

    One solution suggested here ....

    or
Also some thoughts on turning off document scanning in your av - if that is an option.

    Hi PeteC,
Thanks for replying I saw the lockergnome question last night but couldn't access the text b/c I was not registered and am still waiting for my confirmation email from them... So I am really grateful to you for providing the instructions which I have followed: The "Allow background saves" button was checked so I unchecked it. I will post back with positive or negative results.

I do not have preview turned on (I cannot even find "organize" anywhere)
I have Avast! but run it manually.
    Thanks again!
    Tanya
P.S. Would you happen to know what causes this?

    Is the problem resolved?

I am very surprised that you could not see the LockerGnome thread - I am not a member and can see the whole thread clearly. For the vast majority of forums you only need to register to post, otherwise the threads are there for all to see
    In a nutshell - no :)
This is a feature of Explorer in Windows 7 - probably in Vista too, but I never ran that. It is not a feature of Explorer in XP.
Implying I hope that it runs at Startup and provides real time protection, but you scan manually?

So far so good - but I haven't used word enough to be certain.
I can see the one from the link you posted but for others I got a message I had to register to see them (I think they were archived).
In retrospect, I think this started when I'd installed an office update (February) and the mouse kept freezing so when I turned off the PC several times b/c of the mouse, Word auto-recovered, and kept trying to save as read-only (which the files were not) I disabled auto recover and the read-only stopped. (I'd uninstalled the update - Heard there were problems with it anyway and restored the registry).
Word still does auto recover btw. The read-only reversion would occur every so often (as mentioned initially with docs that had font effects highlighted text, etc.)
Yes it scans every boot. I just scan the PC manually.
I'll need to use word as much as usual today and will post back with the outcome (But last night everything was fine)
Thanks! I really appreciate the help!

Reverting to read-only files in Word 2007 - Again

    Hi,
I posted this problem initially in May and was given this link: http://help.lockergnome.com/office/W...ict951118.html
    with the following instructions
Which resolved the problem but it has started to reoccur.

I open the files as normal (not read-only) and somewhere down the line they become read-only (when I save them).

    I found this link:
“I keep getting files that I am working on locked for editing. Word only allows me to open them read-only”
    http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/LockedFiles.htm

Searching returns no “~*.do?” or “~*.wbk” files but searching for “*.tmp” returns 8 “~WRL<4 numbers>.tmp” files (4 differently named files (each has a duplicate in another folder)) all modified in 2009.
These are located in 2 folder copies that came from my other PC running XP SP2 and Word 2003.

Is it safe to delete the 8 “~WRL<4 numbers>.tmp”? (They are not in the Windows directory).

The files that I am having problems with are not in compatibility mode (maybe 1 is I cannot recall).

    Thank you in advance
P.S. I am pretty hazy as when the problem started … The folder copies are from March of 2010
