There is no OS on my server and I would like to set it up as a workstation.

When I try to Install a full version of XP Pro Windows, Boot Manager comes up and gives me the option of choosing an OS but when I choose Microsoft Windows Setup I get a message saying

    windows failed to start..... and

    File: \$LDR$
    Status: 0xc000000f
Info: The selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt.

Any suggestions on how to install XP Pro on a Poweredge Server??

    Thanks for your help!

    John

    What boot manager?
Try accessing the BIOS and change the first boot device to the CDROM.
Also, there may have been a boot manager installed on the MBR, in which case you'd have to boot from the XP CD, run Recovery Console and create a new MBR.

    Hi Tony

Been into the Bios and changed first boot to CDROM and booted with
XP Disk but still get boot manager screen. Machine previously had SBS 2003 installed and some one else wiped the drives so not sure what they did.

The Windows Boot Manager screen gives you 2 setup options:
    1st - setup windows sbs 2003
    2nd- setup Windows

When you choose setup sbs 2003 machine goes through all the steps to reinstall sbs 2008!!(not 2003)
When you choose setup windows it trys to read the XP CDRom but eventually
goes back to Windows Boot manager.

There are no recovery disks with the machine - is there anywhere I can dowload one from?

    Thanks
    John

If you get a boot manager like that then there's a partition on the drive that holds the boot manager or the boot manager is writtern into the MBR.

It does not sound like you are using a MS XP CD. You will need an actual XP cd from MS. And you'll also need to download thye drivers for the hard disk, as well as other XP drivers.
    install XP Poweredge 2850

This Dell manial may give some clues.

Thanks for the links.I am using a XP Pro OEM CD brand new. Tried putting the PERC drivers on a floppy and rebooting but can't get the drivers loaded either.

Will try again on Monday as I need a break from it to re-think!!!

    Thanks!!

Your computer has a bootable utility partition and when no operating system is installed it will boot.
    http://www.mohca.gov.bt/~susumu/other/dell/2850/data/pe2850/doc/en/ug_en/t1390c20.htm

Try to get to the bios, change the first boot device to the CDROM, disable the virtual devices and then save the changes.

Your system may show these devices in the bios:
    1. Embedded VIRTUALCDROM DRIVE <<< disable
    2. Embedded VIRTUALFLOPPY DRIVE <<< disable
    3. Diskette Drive A:
    4. IDE CD-ROM device <<< is what you want for 1st device

You might want to download the Ultimate Boot CD (UBCD) and shred the drive. Since the invention of Vista which has its own bootloader SBS 2008 might have something similar and prevents XP from loading its bootup routine from the Disc.
