    Hi,

I recently got a new computer (this is the one I'm using to write this post) and from day one I have noticed that JAWS will not read out the file extensions of virtually any file on any file type. I got JAWS to work propperly with this feature some months ago, and then the problems with the hard drive started. After the hard drive was restored and all the data backed up, the JAWS reverted back to its old settings of not reading file extensions for any file on any file type except the Windows files and on unknown file types.

I need someone who can help me fix this problem asap as it is getting really annoying when I'm doing something and two files are named the same to know which file I'm actually opening rather than to see which file type the file actually is. For example:

I have two files both called videoplayback, and one of them is .mp3, the other one is in .mp4. JAWS will not read out the file extensions, so I don't know which videoplayback file I'm opening or whether it is the .mp3 or the .mp4 file.

    Yours,
    Jamie.

PS. Is it normal for file names to not have the file extension when you're in the "New name" box and you're renaming the file to something else?

When you go to My Computer (Windows Explorer) -> Tools menu -> Folder Options -> View tab, there is probably a check in the box for "Hide extensions for known file types ", uncheck it.
