When I use print screen and go to paint>edit>paste>save as>my documents the .bmp or if I change it to .jpg alway is 5.4 mb.

Is there a way to change the default from the 5.4mb to something lower. I would like to make it around 2mb, some of my friends are still on dial up and a 5mb dl for just one image just takes to long.

I was told of a free program called Gladwin PrintScreen that may do this, I would rather use paint if I could instead on dling another imaging program.

    Thanks Gary

You could save it as a 256 color bitmap, accept the warning and then save the jpg.

Picture quality won't be great for Photo's Game Screen Shots etc but for basic snap shots 256 colours is acceptable.

If the loss of quality is too much then a 3rd party program is your only real choice.

By the way you do realise you can capture the active window rather than the whole screen by pressing Alt+PrtSc, this would also reduce image size and may be suitable for your needs.

Have you checked the "Attributes" (on the Image menu)? 640 width X 480 height pixels is more than adequate for viewing on a monitor. If they plan to print the picture, though, they'll just have to wait through a long download.

In my dialup days, even a MB took 20 minutes or longer. We all aimed for around less than 100K for sending pictures.

    Thank you, Gary

    File->Save As

In the Save as type: dropdown select 256 color bitmap

No I have not tried it. I'll give it a look. I would like to just change the paint default.

    Thank you Gary

I don't think there's anyway of doing that, you have to understand Paint is a very basic imaging program, anything sophisticated  and it's no good.

Consider trying Picasa which is provided for free from Google. It gathers all your image files in one location (actually shortcuts to them) and if you choose to E-mail any of them, it will reduce them down to a sociable size. Many other nice features as well.

I knocked it down to the 256 it was still at 4.8mb, then I went to 16 bit and did it. I sent a email of a SS 2 16 bit to myself and it good enough for what I need to do.

Also am going to fool around with the other programs the guys suggested.

    Thanks again everyone.

All set now, but I am going to look into it later tonight for future reference. Seems like a nice program to have.

    Thank you Gary

Either you done something wrong or you're running at a seriously high resolution :D

16bit is 65536 colours, I cannot see how that could possibly be smaller than 8bit (256 colours)

Probably best, paint is very restrictive in what it can do.

Er, I misread the drop down box. I had set it to 16 color bitmap.

    Thanks again Gary

No need to change the color quality in Paint to reduce image file size, just resize the image prior to saving it. You likely have a very high screen resolution and if save the image at about half to three quarters the original dimensions the file size will reduce proportionaltely.

A good (and free) program to resize almost any image is IrfanView. Here is a link to the web site: Click Here

Are you talking about changing settings from paint>image>attributes?
