I read somewhere (pretty sure it was a Microsoft site) that they'd removed the offending update from the automatic update mechanism. So, after the recovery process and normal boot, Hello! the update presented itself again. I assumed they had fixed it, wrongly! It buggered it up again!

Anyway, all is well and KB977165 is being ignored! :D

I read that you needed to contact MS who will advise or possibly provide a patch which will allow you to continue Windows updates normally. (this whilst the computer still loads Windows).

    Try that

Yes, I read about that a couple of days ago Arie. I'll be seeing my neighbour later so I'll have a look for it then.

I think the rootkit has got MS out of a corner. Days ago they said it only affected a 'limited' number of people and played the whole thing down. That enraged me as they did not take into account people like my neighbour who didn't have a recovery CD or people with Netbooks etc who couldn't solve the problem themselves. The update cost a lot of people a lot of money. What happened to QC and testing these things before unleashing them on the public? I've never been a big fan of MS and I think this is just typical of them.

    Thanks for the info Arie.

If it is all (or mostly) caused by a rootkit, you can't fault Microsoft for it.

    Have a read here: http://www.symantec.com/connect/blogs/tidserv-and-ms10-015

I read a report similar to that shortly after my previous posting Arie. If that is the truth - that all the people affected by the BSOD/KB977165 update were actually infected with this rootkit, then apart from the fact a lot of people need to reassess their PC security, I would have to say that indeed, it may not have been MS's fault after all! It felt good to blow off a bit of steam at them though!

What would be the odds on so many people being affected this way I wonder?

    Whatever next?!

Kaspersky have released a removal tool for the rootkit involved with the KB977165 Feb Windows Update.

I haven't tried it yet as my neighbour isn't available but I'll let you know of anything relevant as soon as I can.

Oh, I'm sure the number of infections with this rootkit is huge. Ever seen those emails with FedEX or DHL delivery notifications? They have a nice attachment (which carries this pest), and soooo many users just can't help themselves; they just have to run the attachment.

I'm sure you're right Arie, human nature being what it is! Basically we're all curious. Why do we never learn from the old adage - If it aint broke, Don't fix it!

Anyway, I'm pleased to say I ran the rootkit removal tool, (Rootkit.Win32.TDSS) re-booted as instructed, switched back on the automatic updates, ran the Windows Update and updated KB977165, rebooted again and everything is back to normal.

Thanks again to all of you for your help.
