Yesterday my system downloaded 9 updates (below) and I haven't experienced any problems.

    KB977165, KB978706, KB977914, KB975560, KB978251, KB975713, KB9878037, KB971468, KB978262

Most reporting this problem claim 10 or 11 updates, I'm wondering if it's one of the extra two that caused the issue or whether it's one of the above only affecting some systems?

FWIW My system updated Thursday 11 - Feb - 2010 @ 03:00 GMT (maybe MS pulled updates when they realised there was a problem).

The problem are caused by KB977165, see Restart issues after installing MS10-015. It's not universal, but some users do report problems.

    Here is how to fix:

    • Boot from your Windows XP CD and start the recovery console.
    • You may need to press F6 while the Recovery Console loads in order to load SATA drivers; these can be found on your motherboard CD (or downloaded from the manufacturer web site).
    • If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you must access from the Recovery Console.
    • When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
    • Type: CD $NtUninstallKB977165$\spuninst (press ENTER)
    • Type: BATCH spuninst.txt (press ENTER)
    • Type: exit (press ENTER)

Here's some other articles you may need/want to read:

Installing Windows XP Recovery Console. This installs the RC on your computer, so you have it always available as a boot option.

Hmm, dodged the bullet again (twice in as many days).

Maybe I should play the lottery this week :)

Taking Steve's advise now though, Automatic Updates are now set to download but not install.

Through Microsoft Update, I was offered 9 updates for Windows, 2 updates for Office and KB890830. That's a total of 12. Depending on which you count, it can be 9-12. (I've had no problems.)

My Automatic Updates are always set to Download but do not Install, would not trust them the other way.
