I just installed IE8 and everything seems to be fine--except for one thing.

Whenever I open the IE8 Browser my ICONS on the COMMAND, STATUS & MENU tool bars are the large Icons--I cannot find a way to change them to SMALL ICONS--on IE7 I used to be able to RIGHT CLICK on the Command toolbar and it would give me the option to change from LARGE to SMALL ICONS--with IE8 I that option does not appear.

Anybody please have an answer or suggestion.

    Thank you,
    Paul

    Try .....

Right click on a blank area adjacent to the Home icon > Customize - are large icons checked? A toggle may be in order.

  3. to hide this advert.

Charles, when I RT Click by the HOME Icon & go to CUSTOMIZE I get the following:

Show Stop & Refresh Buttons before Address Bar

    Show ALL text labels
    Show Selective Text
    Show only Icons

    Add or Remove Commands

Nothing about Large or Small Icons

I even searched thru the Add or Remove sections to see if there was a command in there that would allow me to add an Icon change but there was not.

    Any other suggestions please,

    Paul

Strange - I am running 7 Pro x64, but will fire up my XP Pro SP3 box to check there and post back.

Even stranger - my install of IE8 on XP shows the Use Large icons option

How did you install IE8 - through Windows Update or from a direct download from MS saved to the hard drive?

You could consider uninstalling IE8 through Add/Remove Programs and reinstalling - your install may be corrupted.

Pete--I'm only running Win XP Pro SP2--I have been scared to D/L SP3 to to everything I heard.

I have a laptop running Vista Home Premium and it works just like what I have in IE7---I am able to change to Large or Small Icons simply by Rt Clicking the Command bar.

Please let me know because with these Larger Icons they take up a lot of space even on a 19 screen.

    Thanks Pete

Unfortunately I do not have access to a PC running SP2, but IE8 is compatible with SP2 & 3 so SP2 should not be an issue.

I can really only repeat my suggestion of uninstalling IE8 and reinstalling from the direct download.

Pete, Removed & Re-installed IE8 from the link you gave me--problem still exists.

It's funny to because I use Outlook Express & all the Icons there remained the same size--

This may be a little off topic but is there any problems with installing XP SP3 now? Maybe if I installed that it might have some bearing.

    Your thoughts please.

    Paul

I'm lost as to the cause of your problem and have no other suggestions to make.

AFAIK SP3 has not changed apart from further critical updates supplied through Windows Update.

If you install it from a direct download to hard drive you can uninstall it - I think the same is true of Windows update, but cannot be sure. I cannot guarantee that you will experience no issues - for my part I ran the beta and RC versions of SP3 with no problems prior to the final release and no problems since, although I am now running 7.

However I would be sure to have a current backup of all important data prior to installing - just in case :)

I very much doubt that it would resolve the issue.

One point to note as SP3 includes a recoded version of IE 6 which is not compatible with the 'old' IE6 . This means that if you have IE7 installed prior to installing SP3 you cannot remove it as the uninstall endeavours to roll back to a version of IE6 which is not compatible with that in SP3.

Is it not there, or is it grayed out?

If not there, I think that was in one of the beta builds, so you may want to see the version number of IE you are running. Although I doubt you are running a beta.

I'd try running sfc /scannow to see if that could resolve the issue.

Pete--I'm going to leave SP3 alone for the time being as I also want to move to WIN 7 as soon as I can find someone to help me build my own computer.

Arie--to answer you 1st question--the LARGE ICON selection is just plain not there (no grayed out).

I ran the sfc /scannow and it asked me to put my disc in which I did and I had to continuously hit RETRY but it did finish whatever it was doing. I then again removed IE8 and when I opened IE7 it gave me the following choices:

    Lock the toolbars
    Use Larger Icons
    Customize Command Bar

I was able to make the Icons large or small as I wished---when I re-installed IE8 same problem came back--no Option for changing Icons.

    I am running this version:

    IE8
    Version # 8.0.6001.18702
    Cipher Strength 128 bit
    Product ID O-600-0011903-00102
    Update Versions: 0

I D/L the IE8 from Windows Update & shut off my AV & Firewall to see if it would make a difference--but no good.

Anything else you guys might think I should try or should I just be content & live with it?

    Thanks
    Paul

Your version of IE8 is the same as that on my XP Pro box - regrettably I have no further suggestions.

The version of IE8 in Windows 7 is different as it is included with the OS and not an upgrade so to speak. Maybe you'll have better luck with Windows 7 :)

Try IE Reset from here > http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737
Or direct download to the Fixit Tool here > http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9646978

Not only does IE reset all Internet Explorer's settings, but it also removes all Internet Explorer temp files, all extensions are disabled (toolbars, browser extensions, and Browser Helper Objects), and ActiveX controls are restored.

It should fix your issue. I would be highly interested if resetting Internet Explorer to defaults doesn't.

    ------

Note: XP users should not be overly concerned with updating to SP3
It has been out for a long time now, many just update without a thought.

kimsland--I D/L the RESET PROCEDURE and ran it---although it did change some things on the computer it did not solve my LARGE ICON ISSUE. I noticed before that I had a lot of ACTIVE X listings that I knew I shouldn't have but didn't know which ones to remove or disable--the Reset Procedure eliminated a lot of them.
There is not a listing (not even a Grayed Out one for changing the Toolbar Icons)--I have a Laptop on which I am running Vista Home Premium--It has the "LARGE ICON CHANGE OPTION ". I wasn't going to mess with it as I'm definitly getting rid of Vista & going to Win 7--but now just for the heck of it I am going to install IE8 on the Vista Laptop and see what comes out--I will let you know.

Once again THANK GUYS for all the suggestions--I learned a few new things anyhow. If anyone has any other ideas or suggestions please post them and I will give them a try.

    Thanks,
    Paul

    Vista? What Vista?

If you still have XP installed ?

    Update to SP3: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsxp/sp3/default.mspx

Steps to take before you install Windows XP Service Pack 3: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950717/

May as well, since you are updating to Windows 7, and also since its extremely safe and came out 2 years ago now!

But backup first I suppose. By the way make sure to do a clean install of Windows 7, you don't want to carry over any XP (or Vista  ) issues.

Will you be trying that? Or is this thread resolved now?

kimsland---what I said was that I also have a Laptop running Vista Home Premium & IE7---My desktop that I was having the problems with is runing XP Pro SP2--I said I was going to install IE8 on the Laptop with Vista & see what happens.

I just loaded IE8 to my Laptop running Vista Home Premiun & guess what---the Option for changing the Toolbar Icons is also missing just like the desktop with XP Pro SP2--I don't have a clue what's happening now--

This is the site I am D/L the IE8 from---

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/worldwide-sites.aspx

Is a correct site or is there someother site I should be D/L from?

And NO I'm not going to D/L SP3--I'll just wait until I get the money for to build another computer and Install Win 7 on it.

    Thanks,

    Paul

That IE8 site link is correct (actually its even more correct than the one I post http://GetIE.com)

Just to be absolutely certain of this issue here. I have created a pic of my IE8 after right clicking on the blank toolbar area
I can remove the tick by selecting it again

    Click >> http://i46.tinypic.com/1gssi0.jpg

    Is that what you see?

    Why not?
I have stated this as a possible fix for your issue, ie it may fix it.
As I stated (and you have stated above) if you're updating to Windows 7, may as well try it. I would.

Yes< Kimland that is EXACTLY what I see --EXCEPT for the "Use the Large Icons "

I can "CHECK & UNCHECK" the different Toolbars and they will appear & disappear--but again NO STATEMENT or LISTING for the USE LARGE ICONS,

Everything on the computer seems to be working OK and the the SHOW LARGE ICONS sppear when I revert back to IE7 that's why I really don't want to mess with SP3 and take a chance of anything going wrong---all my Window Upadates are always kept up to the latest and I update my software regularly.

I haven't re-read the thread as I must rush off, but try checking relevant Group Policy settings and see if the following Group Policy is enabled.

Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Internet Explorer\Toolbars\Use large Icons for Command Buttons
