When I put in the XP disc it says, "Files required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL Cache. Insert your Windows CD. The disc is there but it doesn't find what it's looking for.

    XP w/ SP2

Its not the same disc that was originally used to install Windows with
Find the right disc, or run a Repair on your computer:

Microsoft's Windows XP Professional Repair Install step by step
    http://www.windowsxpprofessional.windowsreinstall.com/sp2sp3installxpcdrepair/indexfullpage.htm

Microsoft's Windows XP Home Repair Install step by step
    http://www.windowsxphome.windowsreinstall.com/sp2sp3installxpcdrepair/indexfullpage.htm

Note: Repairing will not lose any data files, but will remove all installed Security Updates since the Setup Disc was made, plus you will need to put your Windows key back in and possibly activate online again

According to the MS site my drive (750GB) is too big for this.
    It's the same install disc.

Is your CD - XP SP3 or did you install service packs after you installed?

I'm almost afraid to ask - why are you wanting to run SFC?

    It's SP2 Steve.
In another thread someone suggested running SFC to check something on my machine. I believe it was tied to the shutdown issue.

There are a couple of reasons then

The CD Drive or Disc is just not reading properly (I'm just going to assume that there's no issue here)

Or, the CD Drive has been re-configured (or replaced) and is now not in the same location it was originally in.
ie The jumper on the CD Drive has now been set to Master when it use to be slave (or visa versa)
Or the CD Drive has been connected to another IDE channel on the Motherboard

Could have this option happened, since XP was originally installed?

    Charles,

Please try this and post back your results.

Start->Run and type cmd then click ok

    Code:
D: [color=red][i]or the drive letter of your CD Drive[/i][/color]
    CD \
    dir *.SP* /s

As has been pointed out, the Registry information pertaining to the Source of the installation and service pack files sometimes gets corrupted. Often it is because the drive letters have changed to accommodate newly installed drives.

You can check and verify those Registry Keys by running the following command at a START > RUN box:
    Code:
    regedit /e "%userprofile%\desktop\Source.txt" "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup "
That will send a text file to your Desktop that will contain all the information about the various sources used for your system and consequently for the SFC command.

Else, you can look at the keys directly by running Regedit and drilling down to:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

Review that text file and verify that the source keys are pointing to the correct locations. Post the contents here for help if needed. The only part of the text file that is important to us now will be any references to SOURCE paths, such as :

    "SourcePath "= "Z:\\ "
    "ServicePackSourcePath "= "c:\\windows\\ServicePackFiles "
    "ServicePackCachePath "= "c:\\windows\\ServicePackFiles\\ServicePackCache "

That's what mine looks like. My original install was an OEM XP with no CD included. The I386 directory was located on the C:\ but I moved it to my Z:\ drive and edited the Registry SourcePath key accordingly. I have since updated to SP2 and SP3 via the MS site. My SFC runs without asking for anything. No CD is required since all files are available from the HD's. As long as the SP files that are installed in the caches on your HD don't get dumped, you'll never need to slipstream an updated SP CD to run SFC. You only need to do that if a SP was installed from a CD as opposed to a direct run download from MS.

If your I386 folder is not on your HD, you'll have to supply the CD or else copy the files to a HD and edit the key like I did.

You may post the source.txt file contents here for any further help, if need be.

Hm that was really informative surferdude2, and actually probably the best answer
I had him possibly changing CD Drive locations (and confirming the disc)
wildfire had him checking the disc, and the location and correct SP on the disc.

And you said just copy the disc (or required files) to your hard drive, change the registry location that Windows looks at > all solved.

Good idea, why didn't I think of that!

    That's correct:
Yes, the I386 directory is the only thing needed from the setup CD. You can put it on any drive in your system to suit yourself. Then edit the Registry accordingly.

A side note; If somehow the SP cache directories get deleted from your HD, you will be required to have a CD that contains the same level of SP as your system when running SFC. That's obvious but I thought to mention it to be thorough.

Of course doing a Repair Install will require a CD with the same SP level as the system being repaired, so a slipstreamed CD is often needed there.

    All the best, Dude

    It's gotten worse guys.
As per another thread I ran chkdsk, and now XP won't load.
After running chkdsk I got this message...
"Volume clean, finished checking disc "
Then on the next line I got eleven dots and it froze. Every time I try to start it up I get to the same screen and after eleven dots it freezes. I switched drives to get back on here.
And all this after going through a Malware diagnosis w/ Broni yesterday.

Like I said in the other thread...
    From Windows site:
This version of Windows XP Professional does not support large hard drives, and if you are using one that is bigger than 137 GB then you will not be able to access any of the space above that number during install. You could consider slipstreaming the service pack onto your disk. See here

My CD is SP2, which is what I have on the drive. Slipstreaming would be a waste of time.

Windows does not need to load to run a Repair
Actually to run a Repair Windows must not be running
Please read the guide it has very large pictures to view the steps

    EDIT:

I'm just not sure about this. When I tried this the last go round the Windows CD just wanted to load Windows. I don't recall seeing a repair option, and I'm a bit hesitant to hook up the other (problematic drive) until I have a solid answer.

You can either slipstream a disc that includes the updated Service Pack
Or contact MS as per above ^

Note: You need a disc that works with your drive whatever happens, even if this issue is resolved

Let's work on one issue at a time...

Chas, go back to your shutdown problem and we'll look at this once you've resolved that. Don't try to run before you walk ;)
