I have an old Dell which has 256MB of Ram in it and would like to upgrade to 1GB or so. I have looked all over for memory and cannot seem to find any.

Dell themselves have discontinued and other sites I have been on no longer supply it. If anyone has a link to a site where i can purchase sum (in Eng) that would be great.

There is an Intel Pentium 4 CPU 1400MHz, 1.38GHz, but the memory I have come across is for 2 and under.

I have only said Eng because the shipping will be quicker.

    many thanks

Crucial (the memory experts) are out of stock :(

You're looking for 184-Pin PC800 (800Mhz) RIMM's not cheap and in my opinion you'd be throwing good money away after bad.

Crucial was a one I have tried, as well as pc world etc. I was asking cos my daughter was moaning how slow it was and that it keeps saying that the virtual mem is low etc.

Looks like it will have to do for the time being.

    Cheers WF

Well if you're interested in buying be prepared for a shock, some of the quotes I've seen up to now are ~£300, I'll post links if you want but to be honest I'd buy a new budget PC if I was spending that amount.

To set up the Pagefile in XP
    • Start > Run > rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL sysdm.cpl,,3 > ok
    • Click on "Performance" Settings button (its the top one)
    • Click on the Advanced tab
    • Click on Change button
    • Select "System Managed Size" then click on Set button
      OK > OK > OK > Restart

256MB of Ram is just too small now, I agree. (poor girl)

You can back up the data, reformat and reinstall Windows. It would then run like "new "...until programs were reinstalled. On 256Mb of RAM, you would need to keep background programs down to a minimum.

Try running a startup monitor program, like Startup Cop or Startup CPL. Disable ruthlessly.

Do all the clean-up "stuff ", delete all the temporary files. Reduce the size of the Temporary Internet Files folder in Control Panel -> Internet Options (set it to 100MB or less). An antivirus scanning program will dwell on temporary files.

Look around locally amongst friends and neighbours for machines that are no longer used. You might strike gold (or RAM :D).

Cheers for the help everyone, the things you have suggested have made a slight improvement, so moaning minnie will be happy when she gets in from school.

And the virtual mem is no longer popping up

I am going to start a new thread in the software forum

    once again cheers

    Also run CCleaner
By doing so, you'll likely get another seemingly performance increase
