In the midst of other issues (see Windows XP Shut Down thread if you dare :))
I tried to dump IE7&8, since I primarily use FF.
When I attempted to download and install IE7 a message said "Cannot install due to presence of newer version ".
Currently both IE7&8 are unstable and shut down when I attempt to use them.
I expect I now have corrupted versions and do not know how to solve the issue.

I have no experience with this guys stuff but you can try it if you dare: Click Here

He has a repair IE link called "IE Fix" near the bottom of his home page. You may need to somehow repair IE8 before you can remove it.

Also Windows may not let you remove all copies of IE as IE is the only way "Windows Update" will access the Microsoft web site for updates.

    Hi chas,

Just a thought: Since you no longer have SP3, insert your XPSP2 disk and do a sfc /scannow and see if that helps.

Actually, I wouldn't do anything else to your computer for a day or two to make sure it's doing what you want it to do.

Fine ideas, if I do say so myself.

Yeah, I'll wait a couple days to run sfc.

Pete, Since I've uninstalled SP3 I'm not sure which way to go from here.
    Thx.

Your computer is confused with all the comings and goings of the past few days/weeks. I still think it is related to when you installed IE7 relative to the installation/removal of SP3.
Which suggests that IE8 is still seen as being installed.

I would reinstall IE8 over the top and take it from there. The instability of IE7 & 8 may well be related to your shutdown problems, the solution to which you have yet to reveal.

How do I uninstall or remove Internet Explorer 8? See the alternative method for XP.

Pete, I'll try to reinstall as you've suggested.
Since the Shutdown thread has been removed I can't post the solution other than to list it here.

Anyway, remove the checks from these:

    vVX3000 - your webcam
    nwiz - vid card updater
NvMcTray - loads default video profile
    NvCpl - vid card
    LifeExp - webcam
    CTXFIHLP - sound card
CTHELPER - for games and special digital sound recording
qttask - Quick Time (to launch from the systray)(not needed)
    iTunesHelper - iTunes MP3 monitor
KHALMNPR - mouse - leave unchecked
    jusched - Java updater

You'll have to be more specific - some of us can guess where you mean, others will not :)

Pete, IE 8 would not install. At least not w/out this message "Cannot uninstall the version of IE8 that is currently on your computer. To install a new version (one that still cannot be uninstalled) click OK ".
I'm not sure this is what I'm after either. I want one that can be uninstalled in the future.

Unticking the listed items in MSCONFIG (Startup tab) solved the problem.

That's what I thought, but you should never leave readers guessing :)

If I were you I would format and reinstall - seems that you have way too many problems with the current install.

I would guess that unchecking all those entries was unnecessary - did you disable one at a time and test after each disablement?

Sorry about that. I often lose the details.

No, based on the strength of the person I just unticked all those he suggested.
It worked, so I'm happy. At least there seems to be no issues. I've now done close to a doz restarts w/ no trouble.

Are you suggesting I reformat C: and reinstall XP?

I am suggesting that, not recommending it. Food for thought :)

The re-install of IE 8 is fine, and now gets online as a reset of
    Resetting Internet Explorer configuration settings.

Caution: When you use the Reset All Settings feature in Internet Explorer, you will disable all browser add-ons. Therefore, [you] must re-enable the add-ons that you want to use afterward. Typically, an add-on is not re-enabled when you reinstall it. You must manually re-enable the add-on.

To perform this method, follow these steps:

    1. Start Internet Explorer, click Tools, and then click Internet Options.
    2. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Reset.
    3. In the Internet Explorer Default Settings dialog box, click Reset.
    4. In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset.
In Internet Explorer 6, click Restore Defaults , and then click OK .
    5. When the settings have been reset, click Close, and then click OK to restart Internet Explorer.

    Who asked YOU???

Yes, though since I brought it up here I thought I might as well post the solution here in case anyone hadn't seen it in the other thread.

Now if this makes sense you can be a charter member in The Over-Under-Sideways-Down Club.

Or said another way, just follow the bouncing threads.

Editor's disclaimer: In case anyone thought I was being rude to Chris, I was just joking, but since he knows that, I left the :D off.
