Well....it is dangerous out there, boys & girls!

I was Googling Physan 20....it's an orchid-greenhouse disinfectant and I need more. I hit one of the hyperlinks, Avira opened, heard little Avira tinkle sound....Avira said via heuristics, they identified an infected webpage.

I denied access, of course. But hadda do it 3X.

Almost at same time, Malwarebytes came up and said it had blocked a malicious intruder from coming in.

Comodo firewall just sat there and yawned.

I scanned, am OK, but call me naive, I did not know a benign Goggling could bring such!!!!

BUT....heard this AM, people wanting to give money to the Haitians must be careful. They Google and hit this and that hyperlink, and, absent good protections, they get INFECTED.:eek:

I am so happy I got the paid for MBAM with the realtime protection!!!!

That's scary alright. This is why I research predominantly with K-Meleon with the JS off. I get paranoid these days following hyperlinks.

Methinks it has sumthin to do with being a poet, Dave.;) the uber paranoia, I mean.

But for me....it really was scary. How much more innocuous one get than Googling Physan?????

And anyone moved not via our cells to donate to The Haitians.....BE CAREFUL!!!!

Are you sure it wasn't a false positive? It could have just been adware of some sort. Still, it's a sneaky thing to inject script into someone's computer, for any reason. I don't know if it is the poetry that makes me paranoid or the fact that everyone's out to get me that does it!

Totally, just cause yr paranoid does not mean people are NOT OUT TO GET YOU, DAVE!!! :) Cause they ARE.

I have good instincts...tho do not only depend on them, I research everything. This was not a false positive, I think.

And no accident, I think, that MBMB presented its systray balloon almost at the same time.

I used the freebie version of MBAM for 13 months, it never found anything except my own drivers. If I had taken its advice my computer would be a bread board or a big paperweight now. I'm not doubting its efficacy, it is just a little over-zealous in my opinion.

Given recent events, Dave....methinks you might revisit yr assessment of over zealous. Hah.;)

Mine has also never found anything on scan. That's GOOD! Only my Superantispy picks up tracking cookies and that's about it.

But again, whatever I gave for the realtime protection version.....was worth every penny.

I need to look in Comodo and see if it blocked something. Cause it should have.

    Edit:

Just looked and Comodo says ZERO intrusion attempts. And I have it set not on paranoid, but second highest. Is Comodo missing things????

When MBAM works properly I may use it again. Their downloading mirrors are problematical as well.

I haven't had it long....only few weeks, interestingly, before I found this site; I Googled into it as I am always checking out the state of such apps and new ones....new to me.

Only after coming here did I discover it is recomended by the pundits here...made me hpapy.

But I have not had these problems with it, I must say.

I ran it for 13 months. I'm sure it is good at detecting malware, unfortunately it is also prone to false-positives. It started to scare me more than malware.

The 'mirror' problems tend to primarily affect people who live outside of the continental United States. They have improved this though since I first used MBAM.

I think when they develop all of this & perhaps a few years down the road it will be superb.

Unfortunately it started to scare the [harmless noun possibly etymologically descended from the Dutch krappen & almost certainly removed by the anti-profanity software] out of me!

Interesting. I obviously did not know this. But I also don understand why you can't use a US mirror, same as I could use a UK mirror.

Very Fred Astaire-Michael Jackson of you, Dave.

See? Being savvy re etymology has real upsides outside of academia!!!;)

There used to be a choice of mirrors & then there wasn't, as Malwarebytes had improved their global downloading mirrors. It was better, sort of. You also have to remember that we don't all live in major cities with perfect broadband connections. Some of us live out in the country in the middle of nowhere. We like it however, but it's difficult to explain to townies & city dwellers. I'm sure the broadband connectivity will improve out here in Peacefulville eventually. Meanwhile, I have SUPERAntiSpyware.

Freddie Starr used to be funny. I never believed the thing about the hamster. I don't know who the other bloke is.

Yeah, it helps if you can tell a stick-insect from a real stick.

Alas, I have no personal references for this. I can barely be in a really quiet place for more than 16 minutes. Kinda sad, really. I am Manhattanite.

But I did just get the broadband issue and that I take mine here for granted. Also kinda sad.

Here, I am hobbled by the limits of my enculturation. Did Freddie star ever sing with Queen? ;)

Not sure who you mean by other bloke. i only meant to say your nimble in that post was worthy of both the late Fred Astaire and the late Mchael Jackson.

Dave, we are now crossing the line from etymology to entomology.....forget, starting to indulge and go off topic in this thread. Let us please be careful about the latter; this thread is not in General Discussions.

This thread is getting completely out of hand with far too many irrelevant comments - the BBS is not a chat site - it for serious technical interchange.
