    Hi,

Are there really significant differences in quality re different brands of DVD-RW blank media?

Memorex, vs SONY, vs. ATIVA, etc.?

I need to replenish and never really thought about this before.

I put this here cause I am not sure where it might really belong.

    Thanks!

Read some of the above, but this page is clearly self-serving so who can trust it?

    Hi, again,

Woould still like expert feedback on this issue, but just got free shipping pack of Philips DVD-R on ebay for very little.....I mean why waste money on RW when I almost neverever erase them anyhow?

I got Litescribe enabled optical drive for my older Optiplex way back....always mean to install it in this, the newer Optiplex...have lots of Verbatim disks for that.....very expensive.

But burning the labels was a hoot for a week... takes mucho time. Then, it got boring.

At least these aren't Staples brand or Office Depot, or the no name ones. I am sure most of the 50 will be OK.

But I also saw Newegg doesn't carry these Philips ones.

I buy all my DVDs from supermediastore.com and I buy only TAIYO YUDEN (TYG02). I buy them in the hundred packs and they cost about 31-35 cents apiece. I have never had a failure in over 700 movies that was not my fault.

I actually Googled into that page when I was researching to replenish! But it was entirely unfamiliar, so I moved on to conventional.

Not one coaster in 700 movies??? Incredible..

This is way more complex than I ever knew, esp re that link I posted above.

Yet another reason to stay out of Staples.

My research has told me Verbatim...I only have their Lightscribe blanks....also makes regular ones, highly rated but very expensive.

FWIW I use exclusively Verbatim - without issue - not the lightscribe variety - bought from my local supermarket (they all dabble in items other than groceries theses days :)) when they are overstocked and sell at 50% off.

Unless I missed it on this fabulous page....they do not even LIST PHILIPS. Maybe I can go thru all 50 in 12 minutes. Maybe I can use them to make big montage and put it on the wall. Or for tree next Xmas!

Learning sometimes costs money. I should have waited for more posts before I bought.

I had many coasters with Office Depot before I did the research a few years ago.

Very kind of you to share.;)

I do think the Philips might be a cut above those. Hope.

In some items, generic or housebrands really excellent. In others, so not.

Plus, with Globalization-outsourcing....one never really knows the reality of a given batch in anything.

A while back, I got a high end, new WD HDD from Newegg. Had so many bad sectors their diagnostics could not count them. But I sent it back to WD in Canada I think....and they replaced it with a fully tested one.

They also said their testing is entirely random.

We can longer always count on brand names as leading indicator of consistent quality as once.

Had pretty good sucess with Maxell DVD-R 8x Silver. You can thermal print on them. I got them at B&H Photo Video Pro Audio Tel# 212-560-3293 or 866-878-7691.

I know B&H! On Very West Side. Have only been there once. Was so crowded people were shooting themselves.

I have bought Maxell, both CD-Rs, RWs and DVDs and never had a coaster. But very small sampling.

Just to say, I put the data from this site via the above link into a WORD doc and it's now in my HDDs, title, "Blank Media "

Bookmarking not good enough, this is too important. Well, I think.

Also sent it to everyone I know.
