I inadvertently pulled the power cable from my laptop. On attempting to restart I get to the start up page but no further. I only have basic computer knowledge!

    Tim,

    Just a couple questions:

What is the manufacture and model of your laptop.

How old is the battery ?

When you remove the battery and plug ther laptop in, does it boot up ?

    Hi
Its a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo and is about 2years old as is the battery. I think the battery was deffective from new because it only lasted about 6 months. I never got a new one and just use the power cable with the battery taken out.
When the power button is pressed it starts pretty much as it always did. But when it gets to the "windows is starting up" page it does not go any further and the only way to turn the laptop off is by the power button. Hope this helps. Tim

    hi
sorry but I cannot see any of the letters and numbers you suggest.
I don't know if this will help
    AMILO PI 1505
    SERIAL NO. YSLN021070.
This laptop was bought in Spain (its a long story!). I don't know if this makes any difference. Thanks Tim

    Tim,

Go to this site Fijitsu Support
You will need to put the serial number in. Then press the GO arrow next to where you
put the serial number in. This will find the manual for your laptop.

When the manuals are found, there are several, click on the 1st one and download it.
When it is downloaded (hopefully you have a program that will read .PDF files) open the file. Look at the memory section on how to access the memory.

Once you have looked it over and are ready to access the memory.
Make sure the laptop is off and unplugged.
Take the memory out and reseat it. Then close up the memory access and plug the laptop in. Then turn the laptop on and see if you can access windows.

First try starting in Last known good configuration. Tap the F8 key promptly on startup and choose Last known good configuration from the menu.

If that doesn't work, try the Safe Mode option from the same menu.

This has most likely nothing to do with memory. Some system files (registry) got damaged because the system was unplugged instead of shutdown.

If the two startup options don't work, you'll have some more work to do: How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting

    Hello
thanks for the info. I have tried "safe mode" and "last known good configuration" but it still wont work. I have had a look at the web page you suggest and to be honest it looks pretty daunting. Looks like a trip to the repair shop.

    Thanks Tim Cain.

OK, that's your choice. I have run that procedure myself. Just print out the article & follow it step by step... pretty simple ;)

Please note the warning in the article Arie posted .....
My guess is that your Fujitsu came with a Recovery disk rather than a full XP installation disk and that the install is OEM.

If you use the Recovery disk your hard drive will be formatted and the computer restored to the state when it was delivered to you.

Any programs you have installed along with all your data will be wiped out.

There is a possibility that your Recovery disk offers a non-destructive recovery process - you will need to check in your manual regarding Recovery options and implications.
