That's one of the good reasons for having more than one partition.

Another would be to provide a target for installing a second operating system.

Yet another would be to provide a target for cloning the existing system for backup purposes. You can even dual boot it if you clone it with the proper tools. (Eg., Xxclone)

A separate physical drive is most desirable for a clone target or backup image, etc., but a second partition can serve the purpose in a pinch, if no second physical drive is available.

I highly recommend getting one of the external usb drives that are affordable at last. I got a 640 gig from Staples for $70 recently. It's great for those who don't want to get mechanically involved with the innards of their computer. Just plug it in and you're all set. It also provides for great portability of data if file sharing with some local user is something you do. They're somewhat slower than a HD but if you have usb2, you'll not notice much difference.

What brand are you using? I'm in the market for another Drive and want to know if you like yours.

Wanted to add anything that came up for others who read this in the future. When my Screen Saver came up, it was blank with the words across the screen, "There are no pictures in C:...... "

Of course, all I had to do was go in and change where to look for the pictures.

One of my Drives I use for recording TV is, "Additional (F:)." I've used this for quite a while. I have lots of programs linked to this drive. If I rename it, but keep it as F:, will that foul anything up?

    Thank you,
    Chris.

I buy Seagate Barracuda internal drives* from DirectCanada or Tiger Direct, most reliable for the price. I have some USB drives as well, 3 different brands.

Renaming your drive will not "foul" anything.

    * I don't mind putting my head in my box so I prefer internal drives for speed and quiet.

Not sure it can match a WD Black.

it will not work if you are trying to delete the windows partition...
to make one complete partition you need to first format the existing partition and then merge it.

try it and let me know.

    cheers

Sounds good, they are probably better now, the WD I have (40Gb) is so noisy compared to my Seagate of the same age. Also have an old Seagate 4 Gb (my steel DVD) from way back when that's still purring!

One more problem popped up. The partition I put my swap on, keeps popping up a low disc message. Can't find where to turn it off.

Looking at this, seems like this would not help. I don't want the warning to pop up on "E:" but still pop up on "F: "
Reading the link seems like it will disable the message period.

    Thank you for the reply.

All major brand Hard drives are good, and all major brand hard drives are no good.

Hardly need the pop-up for any drive, clearly shows in red in explorer (My Computer).

Not for me. When recording a TV show, I've not been paying attention and got the message. Realized I was running out of space.
I think one time I did some video editing, left the file I was working on, and the original, plus computer recorded TV shows when I wasn't home (see, Happydog500 on youtube).

Message on F: Drive has saved me a few times. Message on Swap partition every few minutes has not.

    Chris.
