    Hello all -

In a few days I am going to do a clean re-install of WinXP Pro and re-partition the hard drive. I'd like to know much room the OS actually needs and how much extra space I should leave for updates, fixes, etc. The HDD has 232gb and I'd like to have nothing on C: but the OS. As always, your help is greatly appreciated. :D

Well, that depends on how much software you install. In my XP days I would create a 30-40 GB partition for the OS and programs - no data was stored on the OS partition.

There is no advantage in loading programs to any drive other than C:\ - some will not allow it anyway.

To be fair you answered the question as posed - concisely :)

Many thanks, lj50 & Pete. You guys are quick!

That about covers what I needed to know. One more question, if I may. Am I correct in assuming that the OS and all "programs" should be on the same partition and all my saved documents, media, etc., be stored on other partitions?

    Thanks, again. :)

Yes, that is the optimum arrangement. You are then in a position to format the OS drive if required without loss of data and with all your data on one drive backing up is easy - back up the whole data drive.

Note that you can move My Documents to a location other than C:\ and the same with email message store, etc.

    Hi indutch,

Another point of view just to muddy the waters: I have 3 partitions — C, D, & E,. The OS is on C, programs on D, and all the rest on E.

Reason: If all my programs are on C and I have to do a reformat and reinstall, I've still got all my programs and I don't have to look around for the disks. Since the programs are on D, when I need to use whatever all I have to do is click on the .EXE file to reinstall.

Also, my C partition is 7.5GB which leaves plenty of room for Restore Points, programs that will only install on C, and defrag, chkdsk and other scans go much, much quicker.

So what you are saying is that you copy all your installation CD's to D:\?

Yes and no. Some programs don't need the disk as all info needed to reinstall is already in the folder, or the .EXE install file is in there. Others "” yes.

Though probably extraneous I'll add that like Pete I have my OS and programs on C: (33GB w/ 16GB free) and everything else on the other partitions. Pete suggested this when I set up my current HD and it really seems to be an improvement over my previous configuration. :)

Another member suggested having at least 25% of the C: partition free, so I increased it's size, though I'm not sure what the benefit of this is.

.Defragmentation of the drive requires 15 - 20% free space on the drive - specialist defraggers can live with less.

    Thx Arie.
I did however just dump SP3 from my machine. With the shutdown issues I was having, and never seeing any benefit to SP3 I decided to strip it and now the machine shuts down properly. Go figure!

Many thanks to all of you for the help and information. I'll be taking all of it into consideration before I start.

Chas, before you "dumped" SP3 did you have any problems with your monitor just going blank and black from time to time? Mine started doing that about the time I installed SP3, I think. Not a really big deal but sometimes it gets to be aggravating. Thanks, again.

Update: Proper shutdown was a one off.
    It's not shutting down properly.
