I am working with a laptop with Win7 Home Prem and another with XP Pro. Both can see the other on the network and the XP machine can access the Win7 shared folders but when I try to access the XP machine (such as a shared printer) it wants me to log in with a UN & PW - the machine doesn't have, nor has it ever had a UN & PW.

File & Print Sharing is enabled in XP so I am not sure where to go from here. Machines are not on a domain.

    Any thoughts appreciated, thanks

If you add a user name and password to the XP machine it'll be more protected and cure your current problem;) Welcome to the land of security...

Would simply adding a password to the current user solve the problem? If that is all it is I can set the machine to boot right into to the user (as it does now)

Yes to adding a password to the current user.

Adding a password to the existing XP user may not necessisarily allow the Windows 7 user to connect to it, and it definitely won't be able to connect if the XP comp has Simple File Sharing disabled.

To connect without using XP's SFS, one would need to fisrt add a new user via Computer Mgmt then set a share for the printer and desired folder(s).
(XP comp mgmt = rt click My Comp icon > select Manage)
