I had read something similar to this in an old thread:

Say I put in a disk and I want that original 'window' to come up asking me which program I would like to use instead automatically launching a particular player. Is there any way to do this?

I then followed the instructions, going to My Computer/drive/properties/autoplay ... in 'content type' it says "music files" and under "Actions" 'Select an Action to Perform' is checked and the smaller 'box' shows the various media players and options, such as Play, Burn, D/L, etc. ... I clicked on 'Apply' and closed the window ... when I insert a CD the light on the front of the drawer flickers for about 15 seconds and then goes out ... no window pops up, nothing else happens ... I can access the drive from My Computer and play the CD, but I would like the window to pop up automatically when I insert a CD ...
What am I not doing right?
    thnx,

Prudence is always good. But all such downloads say this by default. It appears the kind human who posted the link was zeroing in on yr problem per se and chose the appropriate fix.

I suggest you make a new restore point before doing this.
Such downloads also usually give the option to undo the addition.

This is a good, long established site; he offers fixes for many, many issues:

Take the compliment; do not generalize.;)

You want the Autoplay pop-up box to open and ask you what you want do, like Play (using Windows Media Player), Open folder to view files, Take no action, etc, correct?

    Open My Computer
Right-click on the drive (the DVD drive, but it can be any drive with removable media).
    Select Properties
    Go to the AutoPlay tab
Under Actions, choose Prompt me each time to choose an action.

    [It's in Help and Support]

Matt ... therein lies the problem ... I have done that several times - and clicked on 'Apply' after selecting 'Prompt me each time ... ' and it still doesn't work ... I have even gone through the steps with each type of file - i.e. Music Files, Pictures, Audio CD. etc. ... and when I go back to check, the AutoPlay tab shows the 'Prompt me each time ...' is selected ... So it certainly appears that the PC is being told what to do, but just isn't doing it ...

    Tony:

One thing I noticed in what mattman suggested that might not be documented anywhere.

When you click on "Promt me to choose an action" you need to do this for Music Files, Pictures, Mixed Content , Music CD - in other words - you have to do this process for anything that is in the Drop Down and then press Apply

You also need to do this for each internal /external CD/DVD drive and external hard drive you have plugged into your PC if you want to be asked each time you insert a CD/DVD or turn on the external hard drive..

    Hope this helps.
