Is there one good reason I should keep Quicktime?

i RESPECT Apple, but I am sure my other players will cover everything.

Also, it sometimes shows up spontaneously in my start menu/Systray. I remove it from start, it goes away, but coupla weeks down the road, there it is again. Been going on for years.

    It's a sneaky app.

Unless given a reason not to, I am going to uninstall it and all its little reg keys.

As usual, no kinda emergency, and I appreciate any responses very much.

Why not just uninstall anyway Jilly.

You could always reinstall it if you can't live without it.

If you would like an alternative you could look at amazingly enough QuickTime Alternative. I find it less intrusive and less of a resource hog than Apple's offering.

Good thought! I am in a major uninstall mode. Must be PMS.

You would never know my drives in this system have under 20GB occupied, right? Out of 160 and 250 respectively.

Would I also uninstall the other Apple thingies in Add/Remove?

    Hi again,

OK I did all that, did away with Quicktime, cleaned reg, got the Alternative, The Media Player Classic with the nice icon. it's a tiny little thing.

But.....when I tested it by trying to play a penguin movie (avi), the audio was there but the screen was black. No penguins.

I think I have upset poor Steve Jobs.;)

Edit: Am I havin a codecs issue ya think?

    PS....just found this: http://www.codecguide.com/faq_mpc.htm

Says for no video issue, you should enable the internal MPEG 2 decoder in the app. If, that is, you do not have one installed.

I do not see how to do this via the app's toolbar.

    Why can't I leave well enough alone?:eek::rolleyes::D

Not to be an open source media player slut puppy, lol, but I think I should get this one and see if I have fewer codecs issues and can maybe see the penguins.

    Edit:

OK with this new VLC player, I both hear and sEE....the Penguins.
I do not understand this at all....what the issue was with the Media Player Classic.

But I think I should now uninstall it; after all, that is what I DO, RIGHT? Sigh smilie.

i luv this VLC player I never heard of! Amazing options, even the icons are skinable!

Paddy (and anyone else interested, of course), when you have time...or can make some, you may want to get and test this VLC puppy!!!! I would be most interested in your review of it.

I uninstalled the Quicktime Alternative with its Media Player Classic. Nothing personal, it was just business.:D
    _____________________________Edit:

Heads up: this new open source VLC one I discovered and like a lot isn't tiny. file is over 73MBs. I know the QT Alternative/Media player Classic was tiny, but I had no video.

I think I should stop messing with this now.

    Sorry, new issue:

I have around 8 videos I've downlaoded over time, all Quicktime vids. They will obviously not play right now. I guess I need to convert them. Now, in the VLC player toolbar, first item is "Media" One option in the drop down menu is "convert/save "

I am wondering if this lovely app has a real file converter built right in?

I think I should convert these to avis, right? So my new VLC player can play them along with everything else I have now associated it to.

When I try to open the above now, I get the usual interface saying let us take youto the net to EXPLAIN to you what you need, and there is the get Quicktime.

Again, no emergency of any kind.

OMG!!!!! It does have a file converter!!!!!! Can you believe this???:eek::D:D

I just did the first video! Name the new version, added it, VLC chose the format, save in VLC and the progress bar started, continued, and it worked! And now, this Gene Krupa vid form the 30s or the 40s I got from Drummer world....bears the adorable little VLC icon.

I think everyone needs this thing! I am THRILLED!

I think it even does pedicures! :D

    i luv being a cheap date, boy!:D;)

OMG even more! (Last post until i hear back, I swear.)

After converting the first above video, figuring out and employing the convert/save option in the new VLC player, I was going to convert the others.

I looked in My Videos and all the former QT vids are already CONVERTED! I did no "always open this kinda file with" or anything else. I converted only one file with the new app!

It's like Immaculate Conception, right?;)

I love your enthusiasm ... it's fun when you beat the beast. Many of us have enjoyed slaying media file madness (correct codec's / universal players) and recommending VLC for a number of years. But nothing says it better when a user finds the solution and benefits on their own. Job well done ... enjoy! :)

Dennis, with the really nice custom rig and the Crucial ram and the tons of HDDs both inside and out.....you made my day!!

Finding the incredible player was the cake---also, that's what I've done from jump, it's my way but mainly I despise depending on others or living in fear of anything......but your post was the icing...without which the cake would be FAR less sweet.
Plus, I need the additional calories. lol

I had no clue anyone knew about this wondrous app i never heard of....and how lame of me was that assumption? But, alas, among all those I know, I am the only puter freak.

But the core privilege of life...is the Journey. And the goodies, I find, are within that Journey which is not some impediment to a given goal. In the heady challenge and the momentum/dynamic of the struggle....are the goodies. It's a great ADVENTURE.

When I took apart & repaired the first destroyed laptop I found in the garbage....gave it to a friend when it was perfect....it was all Good and all nourishment. Challenges & problem solving, assessing differentially....and DOING. Same deal when I taught myself to use the repair console command prompts in XP, etc.

It's all Good, we can ALL be Lebron James. :D

People think Christmas is bonuses, pretentious gifts to comport with quid pro quo, parties, etc. It's not. Christmas is factory loaded apolitical kindness and generosity like yours....and it ought mark every single day of the year and by DEFAULT.

And Dennis....in all of the above, we need No Genuine Advantage tool to confirm YOUR operating system...is Real Deal. (animated leaping, clapping smile.)

It appears there are many, many fine humans in this community. Each with an onboard file converter!!!!!:D
    ************************************

Now Dennis, I thought XP could only use 3 GBs of DDR2, which is why I upgraded to 3 not 4.. YOU.....have four.;) :D

(That was a leavening gear switch from the neo-Shakespearean and the violins....no need to reply to that. lol)

Thank you for the kind words .... but you did all the work. Most of us regulars here enjoy seeing other users take a chance and have control over their computer ... it is what Windows BBS is all about. Sharing not only our problems with computers, but also our successes.

Good eye on the ram memory (restraint is 32bit, not OS). When I built my current computer, I was hoping one day I would be upgrading to 64bit. I'm currently upgrading our family network to Windows 7/64bit. As I'm writing this, I'm moving all my data off my internal 750GB (will install drive in WHS server I'm building, total 3.5TB storage) onto a 2TB HDD, which will become my new internal Data drive. Upgrading system drive to a Intel Intel X25-M (2nd Gen) 80 GB SSD. This should keep this puter chirping for another couple of years. Oh, will bumping up memory to 6 or 8GB. Now if I only could have more time to work on these projects ... hopefully 2nd week January looks good.

Dennis! Thanks for all of the above data! I like you not only know stuff, but you also think big and you DO.

The Presler chip in this system, P-D, 3.40, 945, can support 64 bit. But I went 32 re XP only cause I like to get drivers without feeling like blowing my brains out.:p and what I read online about running XP Pro 64 bit, made my tummy hurt. Tho that might have been a reflection of the stage I was at and still am....in this stuff.

I have heard about those new drives.....right now, very expensive!

Have a healthy, happy, amazing Holiday!!!!!

(God, I love this VLC thingy!:D also struck me that other amazing apps I have unearthed via relentless Googling, i.e, Winamp, Revosleep, Iconoid, XXclone---tho I have the Pro version of that....are either free or have a free version.

Then, there are the "costly" freewares....like Quicktime. lol)

I've been using VideoLan for a long time. It can play a lot of files that many players can't. It is always useful to have. Over Xmas the little traffic cone icon on the player changed to a little Santa! Their forums are very helpful. It might help if you can speak French though as it is a French app & many of the people who answer your queries don't speak English as a first language. VideoLan can't play audio (AMR / adaptive multi rate compression) with some video formats like 3gp though. The VideoLan guys reckon it is some propriety problem. That figures.

Indeed re the icon. Kinda like Google! I could not be more thrilled I found this thing. Which, apparently I was the only one on the planet who did not know about. Honest efforts, hang in.....and often you earn the brass ring.

This playe, for me, was is the brass ring. But struggling, thru another kind of brass ring.

Tho this thread was resolved long ago,Dave. lol I am unsubscribing.

OK, that last sentence of mine should have read proprietary not propriety. I think that there is some legal issue why some files won't run on VLC but will on QuickTime. Actually I find QT really useful as a plug-in. It is bundled with iTunes admittedly, but I have nothing against all of those streamed radio stations I can listen to for free!
