I'd like to try IE8; am using Firefox 3.5.5 now. But IE7 had a habit of modifying my desktop icons, which I personalize. Unless IE8 leaves them untouched, I will stay with Firefox. Can any one advise if IE8 behaves in this aspect? Thanks.

    Welome to WindowsBBS :)

I have never known IE to modify desktop icons with the possible exception of the icon for IE itself.

I have no idea how or in what way you personalise your desktop, but I cannot see IE affecting it.

Pete, let me clarify. My desktop has lots of icons. I change their icon images to symbols that each URL represents. IE7 modified all of them, changing them to the MS Internet Explorer icon, which is most annoying. After restoring my icons, I reinstalled IE6 and Firefox. So I am hesitant to try IE8, even though it has attractive features. Thanks.

I think that is par for the course and would expect IE8 to do the same.

However if the icon you have chosen for the URL is the site favicon then that may/should stay the same.

    Hi, grouchodad,

Having beyond 7-8 icons on the desktop slows boot time....same as having needless fonts in yr fonts folder; people don't realize Windows loads every single font you have there automatically, and most of us have a gazillion we never use.

May I suggest you make a new desktop folder--you may choose an icon you adore for this... mine is titled "Shortcuts," and drag all the icons you use infrequently into it?

I too have never heard of any version of IE or any other browser changing desktop icons. FX is my default browser and I also use IE8.

You could always download IE8, and, if it doesn't perform to your liking, uninstall it and it will roll back to IE7..

Hardly a problem if you only boot once a day and so much more convenient - after all what is a few seconds here and there?

I have 85 on the desktop plus Outlook opening automatically at boot - timing is just right for brewing the coffee in the morning :)

Come downstairs - power up computer
    Into kitchen put on kettle
Back to office - log on
Back to kitchen - brew coffee
Pour coffee and back to office
Computer up and running with Outlook open - ready for another session on WindowsBBS :)

Here's a possible clue. You aren't talking about 'program icons', but you are placing Internet shortcuts on your desktop & changing the icon they use.

Yes, the same thing will happen with any browser software you'll install. Also, if the icon is the web sites icon, if you don't copy & save this icon to a separate folder on your hard drive, after a certain time the icon will revert back to the standard IE shortcut icon, because the icon you were using will be deleted from IE's temporary Internet files (cache).

Also, if you are running IE6, I suggest you upgrade to IE8 ASAP, IE6 & IE7 are both extremely insecure!

Wow. I hereby award the above the Marcel Proust Award of the Month:

"The object of the journey is not visiting new horizons, but to see THE EXISTING ONES.....with NEW EYES. "

    VERY impressive.

I am also now fully clear re why IE8 was a "Critical Update." I am LEARNING STUFF!!!!
