If I merge 2 partitions in to one "C" drive, will the result be bootable?

Without regard as to whether this is a sound practice or not, I need the answer to one question about merging.

I have a notebook that comes with XP divided into 2 partitions C-D. One ostensibly for the OS the other for files. Since I regularly clone to a USB HDD for backup, I feel safe doing this. I have 4 PCs and have yet to encounter a problem restoring with this method. My desktops all have a backup HDD built in.
My question is if I merge the 2 partitions in to one C drive, will the result be bootable?

    Thanks in advance.

Should be no problem, but ensure that you have appropriate backups first. You will appreciate that you will need third party software to merge.

    Thanks for your reply..

I have all the necessary tools for partitioning and have a full cloned backup on a USB HDD.
This is my first foray into a netbook and wanted to be sure there is water in the pool before diving in..
