If this is your second HDD you may want to check the jumpers on the back of the drive. You should set the jumpers to cable select on both drives or set the first as master and the second as slave.

In device manager, right-click any entry and choose "scan for hardware change ", see if that helps.

Do you mean a docking station into which bare hard drives can be slotted in or removed - generally integral with the computer or an external hard drive in a case with a separate power supply connected to the computer via a USB port?

I use a Dynex enclosure and it doesn't matter if there is a jumper or not or where it is.

Other thing is I have 2 older small drives (Seagate 4Gb and Maxtor 8 Gb) and they don't power up in the enclosure the adapter isn't strong enough. So Gabieke, you may want to check if the drive is spinning.

Are other USB devices recognised such as a mouse or USB flash drive>

If no USB devices are recognised you should go to Device Manager and uninstall all the USB Controllers and Root Hubs and reboot to let Windows detect them again and reload the drivers. Then test the ports by plugging a USB device in.

Have you tried plugging the USB hard drive into another computer - is it recognised if you do that?
