    Hi there,

I am not sure whether my problem is associated with a virus/trojan but thought it the best first call.

The last year+ my 2nd hard drive (used soley for file storage) had been working fine with no problems. The last month i have noticed the drive missing from 'My Computer' when the computer is left on for a while. When i restart the machine it still reamins missing. However when i shutdown and switch on again the 2nd drive reappears. wierd!!

But when it reappears, the files take forever to load up, almost as if something is happening in the background to slow things down. But then after a few hours the drive would disappear again.

Really dont know what to do, i was thinking of reinstalling Vista but obvioulsy this would take time and was hoping for another soulution.

    Please help!!

You can do a fresh boot, open My Computer, right-click on the drive and select Properties, go to the Tools tab -> Error Checking, put ticks in both of the boxes and run the scan. It may take several hours to complete and could seem that it has stopped working, but wait until it completes (you can let it run overnight).

I dont know why, but when i opened the case and pulled the plugs out and replaced, the drive now seems to be working fine. It has been a week so far without any problems.

    Fingers crossed...

Connectors can corrode slightly due to humidity in the air. However, I do suggest backing up your stored data to another medium just in case the drive is failing. External usb drives are pretty cheap now, well worth the price ($50-150) as compared to cost of clean room data recovery ($500-2000).
