Good evening, I just finished repairing a HP Pavilion a1550e for a friend. His system was infected with a slew of virues and I was not able to clean the viruses, not to mention the browser was also "hijacked ". After doing a system recovery, I'm able to browse the internet with no issues, all sites open fine however, when I log into comcast.net and download the Mcafee suite software that they offer to their customers, the install fails and I can no longer visit any sites. When a site is entered into the browser, the page opens, but is completely blank. If I click an icon on the desktop I receive an error, internet explorer cannot download 711-30572-11896-7, which I have never seen or heard of before today.

I performd another systen recovery and once again I can view any web site, but again when I go out to www.comcast.net and download the Mcafee suiute and install it, the install fails and I'm back to square one, unable to view sites, page opens, but are blank. Any input would be appreciated.

I would forget about Mcafee and download one of the freebie av's and firewall - Avast or Avira + Comodo (firewall only).

Pete, problem is now solved. I'm leaning toward an infected MBR. I believe the HP recovery process installs just the OS into its own allocated partition while data and programs are retained on another. I actually performed a clean install of XP, restored data and loaded the McAfee and all is well. Thanks for Avast and Avira + Comodo tip.
