I am trying to send email from a remote location using a different ISP than my own.
I have the Outgoing Mail server (SMPT) set the same as I would when connected directly to my ISP (eg mail.optusnet.com.au) but it doesn't work.
I am able to read email remotely with Incoming Server (pop3) set to mail.optusnet.com.au
Is it possible to set up the Outgoing Server to enable email to be sent remotely and if so how?
    Thanks

AFAIK that is not possible - you can only send from your ISP.

Have you tried your ISP's web mail - that will work from anywhere.

Thanks Pete for the quick response

Yes I know that I can send via my ISPs web page and that is what I have been doing.
It's just easier to compose email using Outlook/Eudora etc before connecting and then sending that way. Also I can't embed images using the web page (only can attach files).

Hey I just remembered that last year I was able to use my PDA to send emails so if I could use a PDA then surely I should be able to use a Notebook/Netbook.
Also I am sure that when I was in Dubai 2 weeks ago I ws able to send via my Netbook. Maybe it's something to do with how the WiFi point is set up.

I must check out how I had my PDA configured but I thought it was set up the same as I have my Netbook set up.

Try setting the Outgoing Server (SMTP) port to 587.

If your home ISP has their mail serer accepting mail on that port you'll be able to send that way.

    HI Arie

Sorry for the delay in reponding. I was overseas at the time, could not find an internet cafe/wifi point for a few days after your message and then got busy and forgot. Home now (isn't home good?).
I tried setting the port (in Eudora) without any success. Also sent a 'help' message to the Eudora web site forum and replies did not help.
THEN I tried MS OUTLOOK and had NO PROBLEMS so (it seems) the problem is something to do with Eudora. Strange thing is that I can download (to my Inbox) using Eudora with NO problems but cannot SEND.
I will try and see any obvious differences between Outlook and Eudora in the future but right now I am home (for at least 10 months) and using direct connection to my ISP.
BTW I did also message my ISP but they could only help with Outlook. I would change over to Outlook if I wasn't so familiar with Eudora.
    Thanks again

Did you make sure your authentication for outgoing server was enabled?

Yes authentication IS set. Without it being set I cannot even download my email to my InBox.

You should be able to locate an error message to post here...

The exact error message displayed when I attempt to SEND email using Eudora remotely is -

There has been an error transferring you mail. I said: MAIL FROM:<(my email address)> and then the SMPT server [mail.optusnet.com.au] said 421 4.7.0 Closing communications channel.

Here are snipits of replies I received (to the same question) on the Eudora web site user forum -

You generally do, if that server does not respond on ports other than 25,
which is generally blocked between different networks,
in which case you also need to find some other server for sending mail.

    and

There are some networks which also intercept SMTP traffic,
e.g. on port 25, and use a different actual server to handle it
than the one which you have specified in your email program.

They (at the Eudora web forum for my post) also quotes a url - http://markmail.org/message/bfup7fpd4db5qxkq which mentions 421-4.7.0.

    I don't quite understand this.

You'd have to compare SMTP settings between Outlook and Eudora. Everything so far indicates it is a different setting that's causing this.

If you're able to send with Outlook, you should be able to send with Eudora.

    Thanks Arie,

I'm not very familiar with Outlook and its settings (and my "Complete Idiots Guide to Office XP" doesn't have anything). Where can I find the SMPT settings in Outlook?
    Thanks

In Outlook: Tools > Account Settings, double-click your account & press button More Settings, select the Advanced tab.

    Thanks Arie,

I see that the port is set to 25.
I cannot see in Eudora how to check/change this the only settings for SENDING email are -
    -Email address
-Domain to add to unqualified addresses
    -SMTP server:
    -SMTP Relay personality (see below)
    -Allow authentication (check box)
    -Immediate send (check box)
-Send on check (check box) when this is set then Eudora sends any queued messages when you 'check for mail'
-Use submission port (587) (check box) - I have tried setting this 'on' without success
-Secure sockets when sending (select from -
    Never
    If available, STARTTLS
    Required Alternate Port
    Required, STARTTLS

I cannot test anything at present until I go to a WiFi hotspot but what I thought I would do is UNINSTALL Eudora and remove any related files. Re-install Eudora and when it asks do I want to import settings from Outlook I will select YES (as I know that Outlook works) and then test again.

HEY I just read the following and wonder if it could be the answer to my problem -

The Internet Service Provider (ISP) with whom you have your primary email account may not allow you to send messages through any other Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) server but their own. If you have accounts at other ISPs or third-party email services, you may not be able to send mail from those accounts unless you use your primary ISP's SMTP servers. The SMTP relay feature allows you to send all your mail through your primary ISP's server.

I will check this out too. Do you think that this may be the answer to my sending problems?

    I don't think, I know for sure.

That is more & more a policy. You may be able to work around that by my suggestion of setting your SMTP port to 587.... if your 'home' ISP supports this.

Just tried to send an email using port 587. It seems that my ISP doesn't allow (port) 587.
Maybe I should just give up (on using Eudora remotely) and use MS Outlook. Pity as I paid for Eudora. Maybe I should send them an email complaining that I can't use their product remotely yet Outlook does work.
    Annoying.

If Outlook works, Eudora should work too. Unfortunately I can't advise on Eudora settings as I never used it.
