    Hi all,

I tried to do a sfc /scannow but it asked for my XP SP2 CD. Well, my XP CD is SP1.

I found several instructions on how to make a new CD with XP and SP2 on it.

However, I'm stuck. Here's what I've done so far: I created 3 new folders on the C drive (XP, XPBootImage, XPSP2); I copied the original XP disk to the XP folder; I downloaded SP2 from the net to the XPSP2 folder; I extracted\integrated the SP2 file ( C:\XPSP2\WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe -x) to the XP folder; I extracted the Microsoft Corporation.img file (using ISOBuster) to the XPBootImage file.

Now what? I'm not sure about what to do with the ".img" file (I think I'm supposed to rename it to xxxxxxxx.BIN). I burned the files in the XP folder using Nero Express (v. 5.5) Bootable Data Disk and when I restarted the CD, I got the Welcome to Setup window, but I'm not sure it's gonna work because of the .IMG file.

    What are my next steps?

I think you might have done it wrong. You are supposed to extract the file to the XPSP2 folder.

    C:\xpsp2\servicepackfilename.exe -x:c:\xpsp2

    then

    C:\xpsp2\i386\update\update.exe /integrate:c:\xp [ENTER]

Can you confirm you did it this way?

Also I don't think Nero Express can work with boot sector images I am afraid.

You can burn your disc with IMGBURN.

    Here are the steps.

    Open IMGBURN

    Choose Write Files/Folders to Disc

Where it says Source click on the icon with a folder and a magnifying glass.

Select the XP folder and click ok.

On the right hand pane click the advanced tab.

Just below click the bootable disc tab.

Make sure the make image bootable option is checked.

Under emulation type chose 1.44mb floppy.

Next to boot image there is a folder with a magnifying glass. Click it and select your boot image you created with ISO buster.

    Click the burn icon.

If it then prompts you asking does the folder content represent what should be the root directory content click yes!

Also if you don't need to boot off the disc then there is no need to add the bootable image file.

    Done :)

Hi jpChris, If you want to run sfc /scannow, to avoid the request for your CD, you need to Extract i386 from your installation XP CD and copy to your C:\. I've done this on all our Home comps as it's quick and easy as a 1st. check to ensure Files are all there. Neil.

    Hi tashman,

I followed the directions on TEG. And, like I said I:
    1) Created 3 new folders on my C drive (XP, XPXP2, XPBootImage)
    2) I copied my XPSP1 CD to the new XP folder
    3) I copied the SP2 download to the new XPSP2 folder
    4) I extracted the XPXP2 file to C:\XPSP2 folder
    5) I updated the Windows Share (C:\XPSP2\i386\Update\Update.exe -S:C:\XP) to my C:\XP folder
    6) I used ISOBuster and extracted the Microsoft Corporation.img file to my C:\XPBootImage folder.

I opened IMGBurn and in Mode, I selected "Write ". When I click on the folder with the magnifying glass and navigate to the XP folder, I get a list of the files in the folder and either Open or Cancel.

And, this is as far as I've gotten. From what I've read, the MS Corp.img file is supposed to be named, or I am to name it, BOOTIMG.BIN.

The link that Pete provided is from the TEG site and it shows screenshots of Nero (which I don't have).

    I need screenshots!

Hi mate I have taken screenshots and uploaded them to imageshack.

It shows exactly what have to do.

You don't need to rename the boot image file.

Make sure you have the latest version of IMGBURN installed as this is what I have used.

Also at the end when it goes to burn if it then prompts you asking does the folder content represent what should be the root directory content click yes!

I selected the pics in the order i needed them uploaded but it has not done that.

Im sure you can work it out from these.

    IMGBURN SETUP

    Hi Tom,

There's 6 images: 8, 5, 3, 3, 3, 5. I started with the last one because IMGShack does it backward. And, it looks like there's two of the same image. Also, part of your screen is cut off on where to get the boot image from. I tried to select the MSCorp.img, but it wouldn't do anything.

I'm feeling really dumb right now.

EDIT: I dummied out about the MSCorp.img file and followed your screenshot to extract it to C. However, when I searched both the C drive and the DVD drive, it was only in the XPBootImage folder (BootImage.ima). Does this file need to be added to the DVD?

Hi Chris tomorrow when I get into work I will completely make a disk from scratch as I need an SP3 disk anyway and I will detail the burning process exactly with screenshots for you.

    Tom :)

    Hi Arie,

I have no doubt most people do have success with your method using Nero. However, you forget whom you're dealing with here. Sometimes I can grasp the most ethereal concept and run with it. Other times I have to have screenshots on how to tie my shoes (and I wear loafers!). Now, looking at your site I have the same things listed in my XP folder as you do, except: I don't have MSCorp.img (I thought that was supposed to be extracted and to read BootImage.ima and put in the XP folder?), and I have 2 extra folders: DOTNETFX and Win51ip.SP1. My XP CD has SP1 on it already. I'm using IMGBurn and it's a different UI.

Also, IMGBurn said I couldn't put both the XPSP1 CD and the 233MB SP2 download onto a CD - it was too big and offered to do it anyway. I chose to put it on a DVD.

I "think" I'm almost there — I just need to know if I should add the MSCorp.img to the disk or whether I should add the extracted BootImage.ima file. I will be booting off this disk to install on a separate HD to test it. As it is now, when I put the DVD in the drive I get a "Welcome To . . .; What do you want to do?, and a list starting with Install Windows XP.

    Hi Tom,
Thank you. As you can see above, I think I'm almost there. My burned DVD has all the files and folders except what's noted above.

Anyway, I know it must be frustrating for you guys having to deal with someone who just doesn't get it, but I will (eventually). So, Thank You for your patience.

I have my doubts if you can get the DVD to work, Windows XP is suppose to be a CD and more than likely the boot image won't work for a DVD.

Just delete the DOTNETFX folder. This folder has nothing to do with the installation process; it doesn't get installed. Its just a distribution channel for .NET (and by now an old version). Most likely you'll be able to fit everything on a CD once you delete this folder.

Well, I can't comment on IMGBurn, just use IsoBuster. You don't have to register it, you can choose to use only the product's free functionality for what we want to do.

You should just forget everything and follow my A > B > C article. That will lead to success.

Hi here is a word document completely get rid of all you have done and follow it to the letter and it definately does work.

I gave it to our apprentice and he is useless and he managed to do it!

It works perfectly whether you burn it to a CD or a DVD.

Arie the problem Chris is having is that copy of Nero Express he has does not allow you to work with boot images.

    @Pete,
My XP CD w\SP1 is 535MB, and SP2 is 233MB = 768MB. So why is yours 583MB?

    @Tom,
Strange, I don't remember working for you? :D

Anyway, I DLed the Word doc and I'll try it now "” using both a CD and DVD. Although I'm still wondering how IMGBurn is gonna put 768MB on a 700MB disk?

AFAIK SP2 contains all the updates issued since XP was introduced so slipstreaming (merging) SP2 into XP SP1 merges only those updates issued since SP1 and presumably removes those that in themselves have been updated. Hence the increase in size is minimal.
