    Mattman,

I made that change and now I can't even get into normal mode. I just cycle through the startup screen. I can't get into SAFE mode or any mode. How do I get back into Windows? I would like to backup a couple things before a clean install of Windows.

    Arie,

    Any thoughts? Thanks.

Running the repair reinstall again should stop it cycling.

They talk about Shift F10 here
    http://social.answers.microsoft.com...l/thread/9d1bd51f-1ae7-445f-98e2-af5a9ecb17fa

Can you get to the Startup Options (F8) and try Last Known Good Configuration?

The Boot.ini file will be modified to have the Safeboot switch. If you needed to edit it, there might be a few ways of doing it.

In the end you will need to look at having a stable system. If Safe Mode doesn't work, I wouldn't trust it.

Sorry, I 'read over' that... your result is expected.

Yea, I just run a test myself... so here we go:

    1. Boot off the Windows XP CD, let it copy its first files.
    2. When it stops to ask you what you will do (Install or Repair), Press F10
    3. Log onto your Windows
    4. Type bootcfg/ rebuild
    5. Add the listed Windows install, give it a name like "Windows XP" so you can differentiate it from the original
    6. No need to add any options
    7. That's it - type Exit

Now use msconfig to remove the new entry in boot.ini & remove the safeboot option from the original XP entry.

    Mattman and Arie,

Thanks, I will do that, copy what I need, and then do a clean install. I did, by the way, try option available on the start up screen. Nothing worked. These instructions should get me going. Thanks. I will work on it tonight after work and update when I get it done.

Yea, no start menu options will work in this case.

Also note that Shift + F10 won't work on XP, that's a Vista/Win7 specific capability.

The procedure above works fine, I can vouch for it ;)

    Arie,

Your directions got me back into Windows. Thanks again. I was able to get everything backed up. Since it is getting late, I decided to hold off on the clean install until my next day off, which is Friday. That way, I don't have to rush through anything and take my time. For now, the system will stay on, just in case.

My advice, be careful when you "rebuild" the system. Check and test whenever you are installing something. After installing Windows, install drivers (I get any updates from the manufacturer that supplied the hardware), then run your Windows updates. Install any software after that.

Don't end up in the same situation. There will be a cause for the problem, identify and avoid it.

    Hi Mattman,

I was thinking updates first then drivers, but I will go with your suggestion. I was thinking that if an update created the mess with one of my drivers, that I should do the updates first. I'm not sure if that's what happened, just guessing. I will go drivers first though. I thinking a few restore points in there also. :D

Sounds like you are making a plan Mike. First thing I know to do is drivers. Your system won't be vulnerable to any malware while you have a firewall working (Windows Firewall is OK), just don't go websurfing to suspect sites or run email, etc.

With a brand new system, I don't worry about Restore Points. If anything goes wrong I just start again. This is a great opportunity to get things "right ". If there are any problems, don't hesitate to reformat and start again. Make sure there aren't any bugs when you have the system ready for it's continuous use. It should run like a racehorse.

    Hi All,

Thanks for the help. I have my drive formatted and Windows loaded. Things are running much better and I can get into SAFE mode now. I have checked that several times while installing drivers, updates, and software. It's amazing what you gather over 7 years! There are some things that will not go back on the system. Hopefully, things will continue to run smooth for another 7 years. :D

    Thanks again.
