When I click Start> Search I get the following message:
"A file that is needed to run search companion cannot be found ".

    What I have tried:

    Replace C:\Windows\System32\jscript.dll

Tried running SFC/scannow. Result: Error Message that it's the wrong CD.
Not surprising after all the Windows Updates.

Msconfig > Expand Results: No Joy here either.

Tried Windows KB fix Results: Still getting error and blank Search Companion pane.

I want to avoid a system reinstall or maintenance fix. The last time I tried that for another problem it totally hosed the OS. I had to format and reinstall everything from scratch.

    Help!

Hi Brian1951. You also can try upgrading to Windows Search 4.0 and see if your problem is resolved.

Windows Search 4.0 doesn't work well on XP. In fact I couldn't stand it running on Vista. I would just slipstream the XP CD with SP3 then run sfc.

I have ran Windows XP with Windows Search 4 and haven't had any problems. I understand what your saying Whiskeyman but I was thinking I would present this as a possible solution to the OP as a thing to try instead of having to go through the whole process of slipstreaming SP3 and then running SFC. If upgrading to Windows Search 4 doesn't resolve the problem then the OP could do what you desribed.

Forget Windows Search Companion - not brilliant by any means .....

Try AgentRansack - a far more powerful search engine - I have used the Pro version for years - magic, even on Win 7 :)

I have been running the free version of AgentRansack for a few years and it will find things that Windows search cannot find.
