I would simply like to know if any of you experts know anything about this website:

    http://www.driversupdate.org/

And I have a few questions about it:

    1. Is there any danger in downloading this software?
    2. Has this been known to genuinely improve a computer's performance?
    3. My Windows XP is set to automatically update every month, so is there anything in the way of drivers that this will fix that wouldn't automatically fix itself via those monthly updates anyway?
    4. How do the people who own this site make any profit by giving their product away for free? I'm suspicious that there might be some sort of spyware in the download.

Any answers/opinions would be much appreciated.

Sites like that should Only be used when you can't find drivers on normal sites like the site that makes the hardware.

Video card drivers are about the only one that might maybe help with performance.

Only update drivers if there is a genuine need - the latest is not always the best - I can vouch for that :) If all is working well - leave well alone.

The only place for currently supported hardware drivers is the manufacturer's website - do not download through Microsoft Update - you would think that those drivers should be OK - not always the case.

Driver Updates through MS Update are optional and will not be downloaded on Automatic Updates.

That is close to my issue. The Wavetable element of my MIDI soundcard suddenly stopped working. It is an old card (Sound Blaster Live Mp3 + 5.1) that used to work well in my old computer that was equipped with Windows 98. With Windows XP, it was always a bit lacking.

Recently, I updated my RealPlayer when prompted to do so. Big mistake. I'm pretty sure it's what fried my soundcard. :( I had to take it out and put it in a different slot to get it working again, but now I'm only getting FM MIDI sounds. As I said, the Wavetable element simply vanished. I have since, uninstalled the newest RealPlayer and re-installed the old one, which I had preserved on a disk.

By any chance, would you know of a good XP compatible Wavetable sound card with a MIDI jack in back? I am not a gamer. I only use it to compose music. There only appears to be one Soundblaster model left in production that has a MIDI port in back, but it comes with all sorts of other stuff that I'll never use (a remote control, for instance) and thus, is way too expensive (around $300). I'm looking for something around half that price or less. A used one would be fine as well.

    Thanks.
