I have a ThinkPad and the modem is showing as working correctly on Com3. I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers with the latest from IBM.

When I try to dial I get error 633 - the modem is in already in use or not configured properly.

When I query the modem I am getting the port cannot be opened. This may be the result of a hardware conflict.

I cannot see where Com3 is being used by anything else. Com 4 & 5 are used by my Blackberry.

In the log I get "Opening the modem device failed with error 000005aa "

    Any help appreciated, thanks

My Thinkpad modem uses COM 4. Me, I wouldn't hesitate to uninstall the Blackberry software and see if works then.

Well, the machine needed a tune up so we decided to backup, reformat and reinstall Windows. Now with nothing else installed I get the same error.

When I query the modem I get this in the log:
    This is really baffling

Where did you install Windows from, a Windows disk or from the image on the hard drive?

I wondered about drivers. They should have been installed, but often I find the Thinkpads need a "reset" before the modem will work. Try uninstalling it in Device Manager and rebooting.

You haven't installed any ISP software?

Look in Control Panel and Start -> All Programs for a Thinkvantage/IBM configuration. Check the modem there (my work Thinkpad has modified settings for our company so I can't give you accurate directions). Check the Help menu in the Thinkvantage program.

Is this the result of an error message and do you still get that error after the format?

I wonder if there might be lightning strike damage to the modem. Best to keep that as a possibility.

Did that along with uninstalling all software with Revo uninstaller.

    - Heaven forbid...:D

Yes, I have not installed anything else on purpose and still get the same 633 error

After doing more reading I am thinking that it is a hardware issue. Seems that this is a common occurrence.

One suggestion was to re-seat the modem so I removed and re-installed it but I still get the same message. I think it is done for. I see that I can buy one for $10 - $30 so I think I might just as well do that than waste anymore time pushing water uphill

    Thanks for your input

Seems you've tried almost everything :(

One last thing I have just remembered, once or twice I have found that the modem might not start working unless you are logged in under the Administrator user, not just a user that has administrator rights.

Anyway, I will mark this thread as resolved, but feel free to post back here again.
