Well... 1st it is a 12.5mm high drive, which means it won't fit in most laptops, since they require a 9.5mm drive.

    Second it's a 5400RPM drive.... so slow...

So by the sounds of the things, it's a complete farce?

No, its not a complete farce, but there are only a limited number of users who could take advantage of it.

No - new technolgy often needs new models of computer - e.g. PCIe, SATA .... In due course new laptops will be designed to accomodate the thicker drive.

But not only that, it's also far too slow, aren't 90% of laptop drives 7200 rpm, and a couple are 10000 rpm, or are all 10000 rpm drives 3.5" jobbies?

So far I've never seen a 10,000 RPM laptop drive, 7,200 is the max.

Newegg lists seven 500GB drives, only one is a 7,200 RPM drive (Seagate Momentus).

Ah, I'm assuming too much that they keep up with full PC speeds. My bad :)

I would be surprised if we every do. SSD's will fill the Fast niche for notebooks. Someday, hopefully not to far in to the future, some/many notebooks will come with 2 drives. A new, very small (form factor) SSD in the 30/50GB range which will hold OS and preferred 3rd party app's we want to load fast. Then a normal 2.5" HDD in the TB range for all that media we can't live without ... and hopefully some image backups of the SSD. :D
