I thought it was a virus. Will run fine, then bang, it reboots. Replaced boot drive with a new one, fresh XP installation. Same thing happens. I've re-Installed XP 3 or 4 times now, but not complete installation - clicked second "R ".
Do I have a MotherBoard problem? Homebuilt with mother board 945P-A7A (either P or PL)

    Anything listed in Event Viewer?

To open Event Viewer, go to Start > Run and type eventvwr.msc, click OK.

Check your System logs for errors.

You can double click on any error for more details, and there is also a button to copy the error to your clipboard for easy copying & pasting.

Each time I booted up, it went to desktop, except once. I had about 10 seconds to get the data before shutdown to DataDump. Now, it has been at desktop for 10 minutes.

Here is data from Event Viewer. Only the errors the seemed relevant are included. In general, the latest events are last.

Thanks for your help. This is my primary computer, used in business.

I've had the computer in the bios setup utility for an hour now and it hasn't shut down. When it goes past the windows boot stage, it may unexpectedly re-boot in a second, or 15 minutes. Does that indicate that the problem is not hardware? Yet my install is fresh. I installed once fresh to a new HD, and then did the XP Install click "R" procedure 3 more times. (39 minutes each time, did not remove applications.)

The SQL error seems to indicate that you have compressed files on your system?

See Service terminated with error 3417

You may want to run 2 or 3 other dumps through the analyzer. Note however that usually MEMORY.DMP is set to be overwritten, so you'd have to get a new BSOD before you can analyze a new dump.

I have not compressed any files, unless the install did it by default. The SQL is used by a piece of software I have not yet installed -- can't because the computer won't stay alive long enough.

I did have the computer run for more than 4 hours yesterday in the BIOS setup mode. But after letting it boot to windows, it shut down to data dump in a minute or so. Can it be a hardware problem if it will run 4 hours w/o a problem?

I've ordered new DRAM to check that out.

If you want to check RAM, this is what you do:

Run Memtest86 or Windows Memory Diagnostic.

    Please note:

Also make sure you have re-set your BIOS to use default settings.

    "running" in BIOS does nothing.

Last evening, when I tried to bootup, instead of the single "beep" the computer gave an unending string of beeps and did not go to BIOS. This morning, it did boot to the XP desktop, then terminated unexpectedly, again. Same symptom as before.

Out of curiosity, I removed the HD and re-mounted the original HD (with the XP installation that existed on that HD). Same problem. Opens to the desktop (however, with strange fonts similar to Safe mode, but it is not in safe mode) and then "terminates unexpectedly" to a data dump.

After the data dump completed, it tried to reboot. Instead of the single "beep" heard at the beginning of the bootup, again the signal was an unending string of the beeps. No BIOS screen. This is with the original HD. So it happened with both HD's.

CPU is cold, no other HD's. I did not reset the BIOS to default. I'll try that next. Could it be a problem with the PSU? That's why I left it in BIOS set up for 4 hours, thinking that a hardware problem might show up.

I'm needing this computer for business.

    Thanks for your help.

    Walt B

Edit: Weird stuff here. I tried to boot. String of beeps, no BIOS. Tried again, this time string of beeps, different frequency tone. Tried again, BIOS opened, and stalled. "Delete" on keyboard had no effect, would not go past BIOS screen. Tried again, string of beeps. Can't get to BIOS screen.

    Bad MOBO?

I've been working on this consistently for over a week. I'm considering buying another computer just to isolate this one for the particular task. I need SQL and it seems to cause an Immediate Shutdown. I have had the PSU checked out and it is ok, under load. I checked the RAM, ok.

I have made a complete new fresh XP install, formating the entire drive, installing in one 100Gb partition.

I install McAfee, display drivers, audio driver, MS Net Framework 3.5

I then let the machine run for 2 hours, listening to streaming music, with no problem.

But when I install MS SQL Server Express, I have problems. It will install the first 3 sections, but as soon as the last section, the database section (177 Mb) is installed, it immediately shuts down.

I cannot uninstall the db section. I've gone into Safe mode, and when I try to uninstall it there, the computer shuts down.

I have installed XP so many times that I have the product key nearly memorized.

    New harddrive.

I have had this combination working on my computer since March without difficulty. With the fresh install, I have eliminated all potential conflict with "new" installations. The only hardware change has been a graphics card, which I had repaired. It works fine. The shutdown comes when SQL is installed, and not before. SQL data bases are not set to compress, which has been a problem with some installs.

There have been some installs mentioned online with difficulty with SQL permission settings. In SQLCMD.EXE /properties/security/advanced/permissions I have set all permissions to Full Control, but one, User (Walt\Users) insists on Read & Execute only. There are administrator and 2 Power Users (Walt\Power User) that have Full Control, but I don't know how to log in to that user id. User Accounts in Control Panel lists only one active account, me as administrator (also an inactive guest account).

Perhaps that latest upgrade to McAfee virus protection doesn't like SQL? I'll try that next.

    I am perplexed.

    Walt B

Edit: I uninstalled McAfee and still the same problem.

I'd start with a clean install, get XP SP3 and make sure that you have the latest drivers for your hardware.

I was not successful. New HD, fresh install. Ran swell. Until I tried to install MS SQL, then bang, the computer shut down.

I bought a used computer with XP, installed MS SQL there and the software that uses it, and all is good. The original computer has a new HD with fresh install of XP, it runs good, too. Now I'm installing all of my software, transferring my SQL databases, my Outlook Express, finding old passwords. Setting up two computers. Not fun. But at least I'll have fresh intalls.

    Thanks for your help.
