I'm looking to get a new monitor to replace my current 19" CRT unit, something in the 20" to 24" range. I want a larger screen than mine has, but everything I see on the market has the newer widescreen 16:9 proportion. I'd prefer the older 4:3 proportion. The screens having the 16:9 configuration are much wider but only ~1/4" taller than what I have now. I'd like more of a height gain than that. Does anybody make a flat-screen monitor larger than 19" with 4:3 proportions rather than the ubiquitous 16:9 anymore?

    Thanks for replying.

I haven't checked that site yet, but I will. Getting another 19" monitor won't gain me much in size, just the difference between CRT and LCD. I think Samsung has a 19-incher, and other makers may also. I'd prefer something like a 21" or 23" if I could find it and it wouldn't get me into the stratospheric cost range of some graphic artists' machines.

Here is a link to 4 21.3" 4:3 monitors on Newegg. They cost a ton :(

Same goes for the 20.1 " variety :(

I guess when one wants 4:3 one is stuck with 19" :(

I bumped into some of those yesterday. *gasp* For some of those prices a person could buy 2 nice new laptops and 2 nice new desktops and still have money left over. Sheesh!

Yea, I'm facing the same. I'd like larger screens then my current (dual) 19 ", but I don't like the 16:9 screens.

Having the same issue with over 19" wide screen. When viewing a normal web page (example wBBS forums) you have better use of screen real estate when in 4:3 view.
Just out of curiosity, has anyone tried a larger 21 inch or above 16:9, rotated screen physically to portrait and set graphic software according ... does it provide a livable view ... or just to extreme??

Not a solution, but possible this almost 28" (1920x1200) wide screen will work for you. It has a very good following at Newegg (4x Winner of Customer Choice Award - LCD Monitors). Delivered to your door $289.99 (must use $20 coupon code 24SALE722D [Exp 7/22] at check out - also must subscribe to their email list to use coupon code).

They are only useful if you watch movies in that format. For the rest I find them useless!

I have a 15.4" laptop monitor (16:9), but if possible my next one will be a 'standard' sized 4:3.

If it's cheaper to buy a similar-spec 16:9/16:10, which it appears to be, what's the point of getting a 4:3, even if you don't watch 16:9 movies? :D

I disagree - though I did not initially.

I don't watch movies on my 22" Samsung WS monitor - but I am constantly opening lots of windows. A 22" widescreen offers almost the same height as a 19" 4:3, but of course, is wider. I actually have a dual 22" WS setup and will never go back to one monitor. I can easily put two full size Word pages on each monitor. Within just a couple days of use, I realized my previous setup using two 17" 4:3 monitors was restricting the way I use my computer, and hindering my work.

I bought a 24" WS for the wife and with nearly 13" screen height, she loves it.

Bottom line, unless watching movies is a priorty, you don't need WS. But if you like lots of desktop real estate, WS is the way to go, and I firmly believe once you get used to it, you will wonder how you lived without it. BUT, I urge prospective buyers to get a large enough WS so the height is at least comparable to the 4:3 you are used to, or else open windows will appear smaller.

That is why I like WS: I can have a lot of tabs in my web browser :D

...or a lot of tabs in a lot of open windows.

And there's a real reason why WSs are cheaper than 4:3 - it has to do with how many display "screens" can be cut from a full sheet of liquid crystals. Making "clean" factories is not cheap, so they are tooled to make one size, or proportion sheet (I'm not sure "sheet" is the right term, but if you picture a sheet of plywood, you'll get the idea). WS TVs and monitors now outsell 4:3s so the factories are tooled to make sheets in WS proportions.

Sheets in WS proportions yield more WS displays per sheet. They get fewer monitors per sheet when cutting out 4:3 monitors, with a lot of waste hitting the floor. They won't take the loss, and instead pass it on to the consumer. :(

I have been using dual monitors since Windows 98... and would rather go to using 3 then go back using one :D

Your display is 3.97" wider then my 19 ", but mine is 0.61" higher then yours. You have 33.53" more area.... http://www.displaywars.com/19-inch-4x3-vs-22-inch-16x9

I'll stick with 4:3, it's more useful the way I use my system.

I am afraid I would have to make that sacrifice too, and be forced to clear off some space for a third monitor. ;) The woes of the computer user never cease.
