    ARC Firmware
Believe it or not this is a constant re-ocurring problem on reboot but I have discovered it is just the result of rebooting into the wrong HD.
To correct this I have to go int the boot configuration {each time} and select the appropriate HD for it to boot from.
I now have to discover why it does not lock in the correct HD to boot from.
This could be the answer to many who are experiencing ARC FIRMWARE problems.
However, how do I change the boot problem issue, this is the current boot ini.

    Hi Roy,

You've only one boot partition there and it is the default. Is it possible you have multiple HD's and your BIOS is forgetting the boot device? If so perhaps changing the CMOS battery will help.

Thanks Wildfire.... but I really am looking for more than a "perhaps" as it has taken me quite some effort to work out just what this problem is.....after much previous assistance and advice and as a last resort reinstalling XP yet still coming up with this problem.
With any glitch at the moment I use everybit of ingenuity at my disposal to prevent me having to reboot, even though I know I can overcome the issue with an F8 and recomissioning the boot to the appropriate drive. Something I SHOUD NOT have to do on each bootup.
Soooooooooooooo I'll just wait a while and see if someone can difinitevly confirm your suggestion or come up with a more positive option.
    Thanks a million

    Roy,

Your Boot.ini shows only one boot partition and your posts suggest you have 2 or more hard drives. Forgive me for being cynical but quite often what you read on internet forums is not what is the case (even though the poster beleives it to be so).

Please confirm how many physical hard drives you have and (another indicator of CMOS battery failure) does your computer keep correct date/time?

Yes I do have multiple hard drives and Belarc Advisor has picked them out also.
    I have a Local Disk C: D: + H: (usb)
My time and date are OK

    Thanks Roy.

Can you post details of the two internal drives (remove H: for now to avoid confusion).

    This is from Belarc Advisor.

    ST330062 2A USB Device [Hard drive] (300.07 GB) -- drive 2
    ST340014A [Hard drive] (40.02 GB) -- drive 0, s/n 5JX99PPP, rev 3.06, SMART Status: Healthy
    WDC AC28400R [Hard drive] (8.45 GB) -- drive 1, s/n 4457572d364d3832323139333530203320202020, SMART Status: Healthy

I should be booting into the 40GB drive

    You never removed H: ;)

I'm going to draw attention to this thread to others that may be able to assist but right now (due to an injury) it's not easy for me to respond. I'd still suggest you change the battery though.

It would appear that each time on boot it attempts to boot from Floppy A:
When I press F8 and go into the disk boot section and change it to boot from
    ST340014A [Hard drive] (40.02 GB) -- drive 0, s/n 5JX99PPP, rev 3.06, SMART Status: Healthy
It boots up OK then for that ocassion but each time I reboot I have to follow the same procedure and change it from Floppy to HD.
Once I change it to the correct boot drive it should hold there until ZI change it but it is reverting back to Floppy A each time instead......regardless of USB HD connected or not.

On the basis that you are saving when exiting the BIOS I would consider replacing the CMOS battery.

Hi Guys...Is changing the battery just that...a rather simple procedure of change then boot or are there more complex issues here?
    Just checking..

Removing the CMOS battery will reset the BIOS to defaults, so a good idea to check/record the settings first. Otherwise replace - reboot.

Hi Guys, thanks for your patience and input. I decided to pause on Boot and absorb the information presented after having tried most things with the exception of CMOS battery.

I chose to reverse the IDE connection at the motherboard and WOW...boots as it should...Praise God.

A little idiosyncrosy which hopefully will sort itself out is that when booted into XP and clicking onto My Computer to bring up the drives I get a torch looking for them for quite a while before they appear instead of straightway.

If I remember correctly the red stripe on one edge of an IDE ribbon cable should be adjacent to pin 1 on the mobo socket.

I'm surprised that it worked at all reversed - many cables will not allow this as they are keyed :)

OK - maybe a controller problem?

    Mobo has 2 IDE controllers onboard - IDE1 & 2

Barring a fault in one controller the driver may be corrupted - you could consider re-installing/updating the chipset drivers, but sometimes best to let sleeping dogs lie as the computer is now booting correctly :)
