I wiped my step daughters computer clean with Acronis, reinstalled the operating system and when I start it I get a black screen with a flashing bar, or dash, in the upper left hand corner. My first thought is it might be the boot order got changed, but I can't figure out how to restore the defaults -- it's different than it is in Vista. I'm not sure this is the problem anyway. Does anyone know how I can fix this problem?

The flashing bar or dash is a cursor ;) Are you sure you reinstalled XP(?) correctly?

Wildfire, thank you for your response. I installed it 6 or 8 times and I don't think I installed it incorrectly because I did the same thing I have done with my previous XP computers. Does it sound to you like the boot order got changed?

Do you see anything on the screen before, like boot screen, manufacturer logo, or it just starts to a black screen?

Broni, thank you for your offer of help, but the problem is solved. I went into the BIOS to check the boot order and as it turns out it was trying to read my Sandisk flash drive. I pulled the flash drive out and it started OK 4 or 5 times. How do I tell the staff that this is now resolved?

There is an option when you post that will allow you to announce that the problem is solved.
