This is for my wife's laptop, so it's a sensitive issue because I don't mess with it unless I know what will be fixed or potentially "broken" if I do.

Catalyst Control Center has for a while been crashing on startup and will 99% of the time crash when any full screen video display is turned on. This more or less started to happen randomly, according to what my wife can recall. She's better than your average person technically, but would not likely know what caused the crashing to happen. I have a feeling that maybe a Windows Update of some sort started the issue, but it's hard to tell. I went to ATI's website to get video card driver updates as well as a CCC software update. That did not resolve the issue. From what I recall she's running Vista Home Basic (I'll check on that) on a Gateway laptop. She only has one GB of RAM, which I plan to upgrade. I'm not sure of the model of Gateway, so I'll try to get that, the video card model and confirm the version of Vista as well.

Any thoughts on what may be causing this?

Catalyst Control Center doesn't need to be a startup.
    Disable it through msconfig.

I know it doesn't need to be in the startup, and I have already disabled that, but that's not the problem or the solution. If it's crashing I need to fix it. I'd like to be able to know what's going on so that full screen video doesn't crash and so that it can be in startup without the service stopping and crashing.

This happens in Firefox (she doesn't really use IE at home) with Youtube, Hulu, Windows Media and probably other sites/programs that have full screen capability.

    Thanks!

What exactly do you mean by crashes?
    Any BSOD, or other errors?

Crashes, as in stops working. There's no BSOD or any other similar malfunctions. I'm not a Vista user (and never will be, hah!) so I can't tell you the verbiage in the error message, but shortly after Windows loads an error message is displayed that states "Catalyst Control Center has stopped working" and that it is going to shut down, which it does every time without much drama. I don't see it as a huge issue, but this shouldn't be happening and my wife would like the problem to go away.

    Thanks!

    ...and then what?
From your previous posts, it looks like can eventually boot to Windows.

    Disable "Restart on error" feature...

    1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
    2. Click the Advanced tab (Vista: click Advanced system settings).
    3. Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings to open the Startup and Recovery dialog box.
    4. Clear the Automatically restart check box, and click OK the necessary number of times.
    5. Restart your computer for the settings to take effect.

You may see some error message. If so, post back what it says.

    Also....

    1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel (Start>Control Panel in Vista).
    2. Double-click System.
    3. Click (Advanced system settings link in Vista, then --->)the Advanced tab, and then click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
    4. In the Write debugging information list, click Small memory dump (64k).

    Still not fixed

    Broni, I don't think you're getting what I'm saying.

Windows works fine, everything else works fine, the computer boots up normally, aside from just this one program crashing. The only other major problem is that Catalyst Control Center, even with it unchecked through MSCONFIG, crashes when full screen video is playing. It's broken. It WAS working, but it doesn't now. If a program is made to work and it doesn't, then something is wrong. That's what I'm trying to get at and resolved. I'd rather not have a workaround for the startup because I've already resolved that.

    I misread you then.
I thought, the whole computer shuts down. Now, I understand, just CCC shuts down.
Did you check Event Viewer for more info?

No prob. I believe that I did check Event Viewer when I first attempted to address the problem, but that was a few months ago. I think I only recall logs that confirmed what was already obvious, that Catalyst Control Center experienced an error so the service stopped and the program closed. I'll look at it again to see if I can get more info, hopefully tonight.

Right click on the windows toolbar usually located on the bottom of the screen. Choose the task manager. What tasks are running when you are in the processes tab? Also, what model of computer are running? I have had a similar problem with one of my old ATI cards and its CCC.

I have had issues with CCC in the past and wasn't able to ID the problem.
So, I uninstalled all the ATI stuff from my system(s)
Then downloaded and installed only the driver (without the CCC components) and all has been well for quite a while.
