I am going to recycle an old computer with Win 3.1 and would like to wipe the hard drive completely clean. The computer has a floppy drive and I could use it to initiate a wipe-out program.
Does anyone have any suggestions about the easiest way to do this without any possibility of recovering data?
I would like a free program and found something called "Killdisk ". Anyone ever use this? or could you recommend another program.
    Thanks for your help.

I have used KillDisk and find that it does a decent job. If you really need to wipe the drive of personal information I would recommend DBAN.

How securely do you want to erase the data?

To avoid any chance of recovery 100%

    1) Use the programs mentioned above
    2) Put the HD in a microwave oven on full power until the micowave explodes ;)
    3) Take the remains of the HD and smash several times with a sledgehammer ;)
    4) Visit your nearest active vulcanoe and throw the remains of the hard drive into the summit :D

Seriously unless the data is extremely sensitive step 1 will be enough.

How about dropping it off of the top of Ben Nevis?

    :D

Not enough, Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in the UK but I bet someone can still retrieve data from your HD if you drop it from the summit :D

Going up and down it certainly did a job on me back in 1972, and I am not sure everything was recovered :) On the ascent I kept getting passed by these little old German ladies walking with canes.
