Today Microsoft announced the Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program & Windows 7 Pricing, as well as the General Availability (GA) of Windows 7. Microsoft also announced an exciting 50% pre-order discount for Windows 7!

According to Microsoft's Corporate VP for Windows Consumer Marketing, Brad Brooks, Microsoft put a lot of effort on getting Windows 7 out to as many people around the world as quickly as possible. OEMs will start shipping PCs with Windows 7 in all language versions beginning on GA Day, Oct. 22.

In contrast to previous Windows releases, Microsoft made significant changes in terms of timing. Gone are the days when it could take months for all language versions to be available. In fact - Windows 7 will be available in all languages in just over ONE week!

I hope I don't have upgrade problems from Vista Premium. I'm wondering if I can do a clean install from the upgrade disk like Vista if forced?

More than likely, every Windows version has allowed this in one form or another.

Yup. It's always been like that. They only need to "see" if you really did buy Vista at some point and therefore are eligible for upgrade-reduced pricing. I definitely want to do a clean install. Just keeps the chance of things going wrong down the line to a minimum. ;)

You won't be able to boot from an upgrade disc, just FYI.

In Europe you won't be able to upgrade until December (As the 'E' upgrade version won't be available until then).
As this is a 'pricing' post, have you noticed that the UK version costs as much in GBP£ as the US version does in USD$ (ie it's 1.6 time the price)! AND it doesn't even include IE, you have to download it separately (if you want it).
[My suspicion is that the IE code is all there, you just don't get the main GUI, otherwise things like Media Center wouldn't work properly]

I LOVE this. Europeans and Microsoft. First, it's "oh, we don't want MS forcing us to use IE ", and now, like crying babies really throwing a fit almost, it's "what?? we don't even get a browser with it? ".

No official W7 until December? GOOD!

Well, on IE they (Europe) got what they deserved!

If you have any sources that point to a December release, let me know, as far as the information I have it will launch at the same time as everywhere else in the world.

What Microsoft is doing is this: it will block customers in the EU from doing "in-place" upgrades, because it would leave some version of IE on the machine.

According to reports, Microsoft will not be selling "Upgrade" editions in the market, at least not when Windows 7 launches in late October.

Now according to Bill Veghte, the senior vice president for the Windows business group, Microsoft will be offering the full version (FPP) of Windows 7E at the lower upgrade prices until at least Dec. 31, 2009.

That's my understanding - you'll be able to buy it for the 'upgrade price' but won't be able to actually upgrade (I run XP so it doesn't make any difference anyway).
As far as IE goes, I don't care whether it's included or not (I have used Firefox happily for a very long time), I just think it's a rip off - why should we have to pay more? Don't give me anything about 'localisation' - I expect that the US version has the option of setting a UK keyboard, other than that there's no difference that I'm interested in. If I was likely to be in the US when W7 is released, I would just buy it there. In fact, if I wanted a couple of copies of the Ultimate version, it's almost worth flying over just to get it!

Well... I dunno about pricing. Ever noticed that everything computer related is more expensive in Europe? That's because of EU taxes on electronics. I have no desire to get into discussing MS pricing policy. I just get my stuff on-line or when I'm in the US.

    No chance, IMHO.

You never know, but 50% off??? Nah, not again.

I did not think so myself. But hoping for some discount before it's release. Just hoping. I sure would like to see the $49 dollar deal, but I know realistically this will not happen again. My fault for waiting.
What I am in hopes of is a deal like one copy for $89, two for $79 each, three for $69 each and even four copies for $59 each. The more you buy the deeper the discount. I may update all my computers if that happened. If it stays at the full price, I will just do my main laptop.

    http://www.techspot.com/news/35542-microsoft-confirms-windows-7-family-pack-rtm.html
This is my dream come true, if it is true: "Microsoft
has confirmed it does plan to offer a “family pack” for Windows 7 Home Premium that can be used on up to three PCs. According a recent entry on the Windows Team Blog, the decision followed feedback from beta testers and enthusiasts over the last three years clamoring for “a better solution for homes with multiple PCs.” There’s no official word on pricing yet, although rumors and previously leaked information suggest it will sell for somewhere just under $150.

Previously purchased 2x Pre-sale copies of w7 Premium through Amazon. Have 4x computers, but only 2x are age/hardware sensible to upgrade. When MS confirms w7 Family Pack pricing, I may try to upgrade my current 2x copy to Family Pack with Amazon. Always nice to have a extra copy around for a new build. I hope Amazon and MS agree with me.

I think a good analogy would be, Large Hamburger for 3.49, Large Hamburger plus fries and a soft drink for 3.49 -- by "bundling" internet explorer with windows, they have killed the market for alternatives.

It would be much fairer to make internet explorer available, but for an added price that reflects it's proportionate cost.

What can I say? Some people like their fries and a soft drink, some would rather eat their hamburger then go to a bar and have beer and pretzels. Why should you effectively pay for fries and a drink and then pay again at the bar for beer and pretzels?

Since internet explorer is "free ", the only way the others can compete is by being free themselves. My hat is off to the brave volunteers who maintain Firefox, Opera, and the others. :)

    Take care.

Looks like my dream has come true! I just read this:Microsoft said on Friday that it will charge $149 for the family pack version of Windows 7, which allows users to upgrade up to three PCs to the Home Premium edition of the operating system.

Well it would be nice to find pricing for Australia!?
It would have been nice to get in on the super discount special, but I don't live in the US!
It would be great to pre-purchase, but I don't live in The US!!!
I think I might run out & buy a copy of Vista & get the free upgrade, shame I'm not interested in Vista!
Can anyone tell me if the WUA allows you to upgrade the RC to the RTM? maybe I'm not searching the right pages?
Now the Family Pack, will that be available in Australia @ $149, I really need to buy that, about 3 copies will do thanks!!!!!!!!!
    regards Fagan
