My wife's Toshiba Laptop (win xp) has several User Accounts, hers, my dauther's, and mine. It started booting up differently.

First, a finger print manager application asks me to log in and enroll a fingerprint. Press ctrl+alt+delete to log on using a password.

Next, a Log-On Manger window appears. User name is pre-populated with my Wife's account, and the password is blank. Since my wife's account is not password protected, she leaves the password blank and hits enter. Then the XP desktop appears.

... Does any know how to make the good old User ICONS appear instead of the Log-On Manger window?

    Singed, dazed, dassled, and bewildered

Hi DarthOdor. Try this. Click Start< Run and type control userpasswords2 and press enter. When that opens click the advanced tab. Under Secure logon uncheck the checkbox that says require users to press Ctrl+Alt+Delete. After you uncheck that checkbox click apply and ok. After thats done click Start< Control Panel< User Accounts< Change the way users log on or off. Make sure the use the welcome screen checkbox is checked as well as the fast user switching checkox. After both are checked click apply and ok. Reboot for the changes to take affect.

Does the machine actually have a finger print reader attached to it?

    What Happened to Icons??

    Thanks for the tips, Omo,

I figured if the finger print reader displays the message to press ctrl+alt+del to continue, that it's not windows but this software application. So, turning off the windows security measure requiring users to press ctrl+alt+del to continue is not warranted in my situation. So that wasn't much help.

When I got to the part about selecting logon and logoff options, I received this message, "Client Services for NetWare has disabled the Welcome screen and Fast User Switching. To restore these features, you must uninstall Client Service for Netware."

Since I don't know where we picked up a windows client for NetWare. I've got the TCPIP stack but no NetWare stacks. I went into windows services and disabled the Netware service, but the service was set to manual and it was stopped anyway. I also checked to ensure that Fast User Switching service is on... and it is. Then I checked into add/remove programs for a roguish program but I didn't see any surprises in there to uninstall.

Then I rebooted and went back to User Accounts to change how users log on, but sure as eggs+beer, the same Client Services for NetWare has disable the Welcome Screen and Fast User Switching appeared.

Any suggestions about how to shut down the NetWare Client??

Thanks. I have been thinking about the Toshiba laptop manufacturer's software... somewhere in the back of my mind, I remember reading about the hardware driver for the finger print reader requires the Netgear Client in order to run. Now that I think about it, I think I'm right, just haven't had time to try the fix. I guess I was hoping a Toshiba pro would have read my posting and picked up on this idea before I burn out brain cells thinking up possible solutions to this problem. I'll let you know soon.
