Windows Search hangs up every time I use it.
It will complete the search and then have to be shut down w/ Task Mgr.

Do the following in the order given:

    1. Go to START > RUN > type chkdsk /r C: press enter. Allow reboot and wait for completion.

    2. Check for effect, if still hanging, go to 3.

    3. Go to START > RUN > type SFC /scannow press enter. Be ready to supply the XP install disk if you do not have the I386 directory loaded to your drive.

    4. Check for effect, if still hanging, go to 5.

    5. Open Windows explorer and browse to the C:\Windows\INF directory and find the file named srchasst.inf. Right-click on it and select INSTALL. Be ready to supply the XP install CD.

    6. Check for effect. If still hanging, you have a problem that is best left alone and worked around by downloading and installing Agent Ransack, which is a far better search engine than the Windows XP one.

Note: You will have to have you View settings set to show hidden and system files in order to do step 5. To do that:

Start > Run > type control folders > OK > select VIEW TAB

Tag the box labeled "Show hidden files and folders "

Untag the boxes labeled "Hide file extensions for known file types" and "Hide protected operation system files "

Hi chas berlin. In addition to what surferdude suggested, you can also try downloading and installing Windows Search 4.

hi try to check this at your registry

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\NoFind

If "NoFind" has the value "01 00 00 00" change it to "00 00 00 00" it might solve your problem.. just try..

but be very careful in using registry it might corrupt your system... :)

    1. Didn't solve it.
    3. When XP CD inserted it wanted to reinstall Windows and said CD version older than installed version.

Thinking of going w/ Windows Search 4.

    What do you think?

When you install Windows Seach 4 it will just replace the previous version of windows search which is Windows search 3.

Evan - Windows Search 4 doesn't want to find music files and I have to go to Companion (which is much slower) to do this.
    Is there something I'm missing?

Evan - it appears Windows Search 4 only searches the desktop, so Companion must be used to search elsewhere.
    Is this accurate?

You may be in luck - try it .....
If there is no Dell, HP, etc logo on the disk you may be in business.

    Pete - I need help.
I'm ready to extract the files (w/ IsoBuster) but I don't have a clue where to put them. I'm not sure what directory to put them in. I went to C: Windows but there are 35 directories, none of which says Windows. Was going to try System but it's files are hidden, so I backed off.

Not quite. If you click Start< Search and at the bottom where it says folder click the button that has 3 small persiods on it. From there select your harddrive. After your harddrive directory appears in the folder box you should be able to search for something from there.

Hold the line - it won't search from there.
Gives message "Not Indexed. Use Companion ".
So I'm now back there. It's what I used to have, but not nearly as fast as Windows Search 4. :(

You have to index the files on your harddrive before you can search for them. To index those files click Start< Control Panel< Performance and Maintenance< Indexing Options. Click Modify and put a checkbox next to your harddrive. After thats done click apply and ok. Now your harddrive will show up on the list of locations being indexed. Depending on how many files are on your harddrive it may take a while for Windows Search to index your harddrive. Once indexing is complete you will be able to perform a search for files on your computer.
